According to CNN , on November 17 (local time), Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, was fired from his own company after the board of directors accused him of "not being straightforward in communication".

Altman's firing is a major shock to the nascent artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

“Altman’s departure follows a deliberate board review process that concluded that Sam Altman’s inconsistent, uncompromising communication with the board hindered his ability to carry out his responsibilities,” OpenAI said in a statement. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue to lead OpenAI.”

OpenAI announced that Mira Murati, the company's chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO until a permanent successor is named.

Following the announcement, Sam Altman posted on X (formerly Twitter) the following sentiment: "I loved my time at OpenAI. This is a transformative company for me personally and hopefully for the world as a whole. Most of all, I love working with such talented people. There will be more to say about what comes next."

The move comes after OpenAI's first developer conference was held in San Francisco last week, where Altman hosted the event and announced a series of new AI tool updates, including the ability for developers to create custom versions of ChatGPT.

Altman also shared that around 2 million developers are currently using the platform and around 90% of Fortune 500 companies are using these tools internally.

ChatGPT currently has 100 million active users.

ChatGPT launched late last year, turning Altman into an overnight celebrity and the face of a new breed of AI tools that can generate images and text based on simple user prompts.

The technology, called general AI, has been deployed by Microsoft in its search engine and other tools. Google has a rival called “Bard,” and other general AI tools have been developed in recent months.

Altman is one of the most vocal advocates of artificial intelligence, but has also been a leading advocate for regulation and warned that the technology poses risks as it reshapes society.
