According to The Information, the technology company OpenAI is in negotiations to raise approximately $60 billion from tech giants Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon.

Nvidia is in talks to invest up to $30 billion in the American startup. Microsoft, a longtime investor in OpenAI, is in talks to invest less than $10 billion in OpenAI. And Amazon, a potential new investor, is also in talks to inject over $10 billion, possibly even more than $20 billion, into the owner of the ChatGPT app.

Amazon's investment could depend on separate negotiations, including an extension of OpenAI's cloud server leasing agreement with Amazon and a commercial deal for OpenAI to sell products such as its ChatGPT enterprise subscription package to Amazon.

According to sources close to the matter, OpenAI is about to receive investment agreements, or investment commitments, from these companies.

Recently, sources also indicated that SoftBank Group is in negotiations to invest up to an additional $30 billion in OpenAI. This move shows that the Japanese telecommunications giant continues to place a big bet on the company that owns the ChatGPT chatbot.

According to these sources, the new investment is expected to be part of a funding round that could raise up to $100 billion for OpenAI, valuing the company at approximately $830 billion. In an effort to improve SoftBank's position in the artificial intelligence (AI) race, CEO Masayoshi Son has pursued an all-in strategy with OpenAI.

In December 2025, SoftBank announced that it had completed a $41 billion investment in OpenAI, thereby acquiring an 11% stake in the company.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is facing increasing cost pressures to train and operate AI models, amid fierce competition from Alphabet's Google.

Previously, media reports indicated that Son had been racing to raise capital for the initial investment, causing most of Vision Fund's other investment activities to almost come to a standstill.

Both OpenAI and SoftBank are also investors in the Stargate project, a $500 billion initiative to build AI data centers for training and inference. According to leaders, this project plays a crucial role in the US government 's ambition to maintain its leading position in AI ahead of China.

OpenAI announced it will soon begin displaying ads on its ChatGPT app to non-paying users, marking a new step in its quest for sustainable revenue streams from its AI platform with over 800 million global users.

According to an announcement on January 17th, OpenAI has not yet officially launched the service but will be testing advertising in the coming weeks. The ads are expected to appear at the end of ChatGPT responses, provided there are sponsored products or services relevant to the conversation.

The company asserts that advertisements will be clearly labeled and completely separate from the AI-generated responses. Fidji Simo, Director of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized: "The most important thing is that the advertisements will not affect ChatGPT's responses."

This move comes as OpenAI, despite being valued at around $500 billion, is still operating at a loss and facing significant pressure to secure cash flow. The company needs additional revenue to meet its financial commitments of over $1 trillion for processing chips and data centers, the foundation for operating large-scale AI models.

OpenAI currently generates revenue from paid subscriptions, but according to the company's leadership, that's not enough. CEO Sam Altman says many people want to use AI but don't want to pay, so the company hopes this business model can be effective. He doesn't object to advertising, and even positively evaluates Meta's personalized advertising experience on Instagram.

However, the plan also raises concerns about privacy and user trust. Miranda Bogen, Director of the AI Governance Lab at the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), warned that incorporating personalized advertising into chatbots could push OpenAI “down the risky path” that social media platforms have taken.

According to her, users utilize chatbots for a wide range of purposes, including as companions or advisors. It would be dangerous if such tools exploited their trust to sell products to advertisers. Google and Meta, the two companies that dominate the digital advertising market, have already integrated advertising into their AI features.

OpenAI's entry into this game shows that the race to commercialize AI is entering a new phase, where the challenge of balancing revenue, ethics, and user trust is becoming increasingly complex.

Previously, OpenAI and telecommunications giant SoftBank agreed to invest $1 billion in SB Energy, an infrastructure company partly owned by the Japanese conglomerate, in a follow-up deal aimed at boosting the startup's construction of massive data centers.

The newly announced agreement will include OpenAI and SoftBank each investing $500 million in SB Energy, an energy conglomerate that has shifted its focus to data center development.

ChatGPT, the producer of the project, has signed a contract with SB Energy to build a data center in Texas as part of its $500 billion Stargate project.

SoftBank had previously completed its latest investment in OpenAI, adding to a series of deals involving the startup and its suppliers.

SoftBank owns a significant stake in SB Energy and has committed approximately $41 billion to OpenAI as part of AI deals orchestrated by CEO Masayoshi Son.

SB Energy did not disclose its market value. Mr. Son's group is also a key partner with database giant Oracle in Stargate, an AI infrastructure project that will provide computing power to the ChatGPT maker.
