Dinh Cao Son is currently a student majoring in Chemistry Education at Hanoi National University of Education. Son is good at natural sciences , but is most passionate about Chemistry. Son's first knowledge and understanding of this favorite subject are the reactions between everyday substances in life. "Witnessing the interesting interactions and transformations between substances made me want to learn more and become more interested in Chemistry," Son said.

Through lectures and practical experiments in class, Son discovered many interesting things about chemical substances and was equipped to conquer many competitions. His achievement of being the top student in the provincial Chemistry competition in grade 9 and being the top student in the specialized Chemistry class at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted was like a "kick-off" for Son's series of excellent achievements throughout his high school years.

Talking about his study method, Son confided: “I consulted with many people, from seniors to peers, learning a little from each person to suit myself, as well as each type of knowledge in Chemistry. I don’t have a fixed study schedule, I usually study whenever I have free time.”

Dinh Cao Son (currently a student at Hanoi National University of Education) has won many awards such as: Second prize in the national competition for excellent students in Chemistry, grade 11, school year 2021-2022; First prize in the national competition for excellent students in Chemistry, grade 12, school year 2022-2023... Son was awarded the Second Class Labor Medal in 2023.

When faced with difficult exercises or new problems with unclear theory, he always keeps a relaxed spirit, spends time researching documents and consulting teachers and friends. When tired, he often rides a bike to relax. “When studying and taking exams, I always aim to improve myself as much as possible to enrich and supplement my knowledge. After each achievement, I take it as motivation to try harder, to be more successful next time than the last,” Son shared.

Striving to reach the top

Among the competitions that Dinh Cao Son attended, the most impressive thing was the 2023 Chemistry Olympiad held in Switzerland. It was not only an exam with a valuable Gold Medal, but also a review experience with members of the Vietnamese chemistry team, exchanging and competing with many friends around the world.

During the time of gathering the team for the International Olympiad, Son and his teammates went through more than a hundred theoretical and practical lessons, with dedicated guidance from teachers who are leading experts in the field. "The 2023 International Chemistry Olympiad is the first year to have a practical exam, which is a big challenge for Vietnamese contestants. However, the teachers have equipped us with the knowledge and confidence to confidently compete," Son said.

The male student said that the 2023 International Chemistry Olympiad exam was difficult, with questions covering many modern scientific issues, such as environmental protection and renewable energy. The issues raised in the exam were novel, requiring candidates to have skills and operate experimental equipment and practice fluently.

After 2 days of competition with 5 hours of test time/day, Dinh Cao Son not only won the Gold Medal but also achieved the highest score of the Vietnamese delegation and ranked 7th out of 348 candidates from 89 countries and territories. The achievements of Son and his teammates (3 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal) contributed to helping the Vietnamese delegation continue to maintain the top position in the International Chemistry Olympiad, ranking 3rd overall.

Son was quite surprised to be one of the 20 nominees for the 2023 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces Award in the field of Education. "This will be a motivation for me to continue trying to improve myself and achieve new achievements," Son added.
