The number of ChatGPT app uninstalls in the US surged after news emerged that OpenAI had signed a cooperation agreement with the US Department of Defense (DoD). Data from market analysts shows a clear reaction from a segment of users within just a few days.
According to data from SensorTower, on February 28th, the number of uninstalls of the ChatGPT app on smartphones in the US increased by 295% compared to the previous day. In the last 30 days, the average daily uninstall rate for this app was only around 9%, indicating that this increase is unusual.
Simultaneously, the growth rate of ChatGPT downloads also slowed down. The number of app downloads on February 28th decreased by 13% compared to the previous day. By March 1st, the downloads had further decreased by 5%.
Meanwhile, Claude, Anthropic's AI application, saw the opposite trend. According to Sensor Tower, Claude downloads in the US increased by 37% on February 27th and continued to rise by 51% just one day later. Previously, Anthropic announced it would not cooperate with the US Department of Defense, citing concerns that AI could be used for civilian surveillance or deployed in fully autonomous weapons systems.
This change is also reflected in the App Store rankings. Claude rose to number 1 in the free app category in the US on February 28th and held that position until March 2nd. Compared to February 22nd, the app has climbed more than 20 places in the rankings.
User reaction is also reflected in the rating system. Sensor Tower reports that the number of 1-star reviews for ChatGPT has increased by 775% and continues to show signs of receiving a "storm of negative feedback" from users.
Other analytics firms have also noted a similar trend. Appfigures reported that total Claude downloads in the US on February 28th surpassed ChatGPT for the first time. According to their estimates, Claude downloads increased by 88% compared to the previous day. The app currently tops the free iPhone category in six countries: the US, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, and Switzerland.
Meanwhile, Similarweb reports that Claude downloads in the US last week were about 20 times higher than in January. However, the company notes that this increase could stem from factors other than politics .
