ChatGPT is losing value.

The battle for market share between OpenAI and Anthropic has escalated as ChatGPT Pro has halved its price, aiming to attract developer users.

OpenAI has just reduced the price of its ChatGPT Pro package from $200 to $100 per month. This is the first time the company has publicly compared its product to Anthropic, acknowledging direct competition with Claude Code in the professional user segment.

OpenAI's subscription structure currently consists of four tiers: a free plan with ads, a Go plan at $8 /month also with ads, a Plus plan at $20 /month with additional models, and a Pro plan at $100 /month with the highest usage limit. The old $200 plan is no longer publicly listed, but OpenAI confirmed to TechCrunch that it still exists, offering a limit four times higher than the $100 Pro plan.

The $100 Pro package isn't aimed at the average user but at programmers using Codex, OpenAI's AI programming tool. According to the company, the Pro package offers five times the Codex access compared to the $20 Plus package.

Claude is the reason OpenAI had to adjust its pricing. Anthropic's subscription package also costs $100 per month.

"The new $100 Pro package is designed to give developers more programming capabilities for the money, especially during high-intensity work sessions. Compared to Claude Code, Codex offers more programming capabilities per dollar at a more reasonable price," an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch .

In terms of user size, OpenAI remains the global leader. In February, the company announced it had 900 million weekly active users with over 50 million paid subscribers. Meanwhile, Anthropic does not disclose its total user count but estimates it has between 18 and 30 million paid users, more than double that number this year.

However, Anthropic has a revenue advantage. The company just announced annual revenue exceeding $30 billion , up from $9 billion at the end of 2025. OpenAI is generating approximately $2 billion per month, equivalent to $24 billion per year at its current rate.

The programming community is also leaning towards Anthropic, with much discussion about the possibility that Claude Code is somewhat "smarter" than the ChatGPT Codex. OpenAI's direct comparison to Anthropic in its announcement about this price reduction suggests they consider it a priority competitor to address.
