Implementing the "500 Days and Nights" campaign, for many months now, the province has launched numerous search operations for the remains of fallen soldiers. Many veterans who directly participated in battles and witnessed the sacrifices of our soldiers have become important information "channels" for the search teams to locate their comrades. The search is not only taking place within the province but also extends to the two neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia.
During the wars of national defense, Laos became a fierce battlefield, and many of our soldiers sacrificed their lives. However, for the past several decades, we have not had the opportunity to return to the battlefields in Laos to bring our fallen comrades home. Regarding Cambodia, during the resistance against the US, it was a base along the southwestern border provinces. Furthermore, the highest number of martyrs died on the Cambodian battlefield during the period when Vietnamese troops participated in liberating Cambodia from the genocide and during the 10 years of assisting Cambodia in consolidating its government (1979-1989) and supporting its people in stabilizing their lives.
During the same period, in Laos, 230 sources of information were surveyed, resulting in the recovery of 10 remains of fallen soldiers; in Cambodia, 160 sources of information were surveyed, resulting in the recovery of 6 remains of fallen soldiers. The recovered remains are managed, preserved, and respectfully worshipped.
Quang Ngai is one of the provinces that suffered the most losses during the war, and was one of the fiercest battlefields during the anti-American war for national liberation. For over 50 years, since the country fell silent, every year the authorities have carried out the collection of remains based on various sources of information. However, many remains have yet to be found. Therefore, the 500-day and night campaign is taking place in almost all areas, especially in places where many of our soldiers sacrificed their lives, but for various reasons, their remains have not yet been collected.
Currently, hundreds of thousands of families have had DNA samples taken to identify the remains of fallen soldiers buried in cemeteries or recently discovered but whose names and hometowns have yet to be determined. Hopefully, with modern support, thousands of fallen soldiers will be found and returned to their rightful places. Their families will also feel comforted knowing their loved ones' identities are confirmed.
Currently, teams collecting the remains of fallen soldiers are fanning out in all directions, following up on leads to bring the soldiers back to cemeteries as soon as possible and identify their names and hometowns.
This is not only a gesture of those who are still alive, but also our responsibility today towards those who have fallen so that the nation could be reunited and the country could be unified as it is today.
