'Sprint' for winter crop production

Due to its advantage of being located along the Cau River, in recent years, in the area of Group 40, Phan Dinh Phung Ward, a large vegetable growing area of the province has been formed. Due to the impact of floods caused by the circulation of storm No. 11, the entire vegetable area of farmers previously planted was damaged. Currently, people are focusing on improving the land to replant, ensuring the right time frame.

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Long, group 40, Phan Dinh Phung ward, said: My family has been growing vegetables since 2015 and has always maintained about 1,000m2, growing vegetables has brought a stable source of income for the family. Recently, the flood caused all the vegetables to be submerged, so now we are preparing the land to replant. If the weather is stable, this crop of vegetables will be available to the market in time for the Lunar New Year.

This year, the whole province plans to plant over 10,000 hectares of winter crops, of which the largest is vegetables with an area of nearly 7,800 hectares, the rest are corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes and some other crops. Up to this point, the whole province has planted about 9,900 hectares, the remaining area is being prepared and planted by farmers.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyen, Chairman of Tan Khanh Commune People's Committee, said: Currently, the locality is focusing on directing specialized staff to coordinate with hamlets to review all agricultural land areas that can grow vegetables and some types of crops to encourage people to produce winter crops. The Commune People's Committee also requested units to prepare enough seeds, materials, and fertilizers to supply to people.

Recently, in some southern communes of the province, many agricultural areas have been backlogged due to rising floodwaters. In order to quickly stabilize production and ensure the winter crop planting plan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed specialized units and local authorities to mobilize resources, repair irrigation works, guide farmers to restore crops, and adjust the crop structure accordingly.

Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, recommends: For damaged areas such as rice, corn, and vegetables, farmers need to clean up diseased plant residues, clean the fields, and immediately start planting winter corn and short-term varieties. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to choosing reputable agents to buy quality products for production.

In order to complete the winter crop production as planned, the Department of Agriculture is continuing to review and propose policies to support seeds and materials for people. In addition, localities also encourage farmers not to let their land fallow, to make the most of the winter crop's potential by growing crops such as corn, potatoes, and vegetables to supply goods to the market at the end of the year and during the Lunar New Year.
