'Sprint' to winter crop production

In recent years, the winter crop has become the main production season, bringing significant income to farmers. The strong transformation in winter crop production, from focusing on production linkages to applying safe farming practices, is opening up new directions for local agriculture, aiming for sustainable value and meeting the increasingly high demands of the market.

Due to its advantageous location along the Cau River, in recent years, area 40, Phan Dinh Phung ward, has become a major vegetable growing region in the province. However, due to the heavy rains and flooding caused by the remnants of Typhoon No. 11, the entire area of vegetables previously grown by farmers has been damaged. Currently, people are focusing on improving the land to replant, ensuring they can meet the planting schedule.

Mr. Nguyen Khanh Long, from group 40, Phan Dinh Phung ward, said: "My family has been growing vegetables since 2015 and has always maintained about 1,000 square meters. Growing vegetables has brought a stable income to my family. Recently, floods submerged all the vegetables, so now we are preparing the land to replant. If the weather is stable, this crop of vegetables will be ready to supply the market for the Lunar New Year."

This year, the entire province plans to plant over 10,000 hectares of winter crops, with the largest area being vegetables at nearly 7,800 hectares, and the remainder being corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other crops. To date, approximately 9,900 hectares have been planted, with farmers currently preparing the land and sowing the remaining area.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyen, Chairwoman of the Tan Khanh Commune People's Committee, said: Currently, the locality is focusing on directing specialized staff to coordinate with hamlets to review all agricultural land areas suitable for growing vegetables and some other crops to encourage people to produce winter crops. The Commune People's Committee also requested units to prepare sufficient seeds, materials, and fertilizers to supply to the people.

Recently, in several southern communes of the province, large areas of agricultural land have been submerged due to rising floodwaters. To quickly stabilize production and ensure the winter crop planting plan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed specialized units and local authorities to mobilize resources, repair irrigation works, guide farmers in restoring crops, and adjust the cropping structure accordingly.

Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, advised: For areas already damaged, such as rice, corn, and vegetables, farmers need to clear away diseased plant residues, clean the fields, and immediately begin planting winter corn and short-day varieties. In addition, it is important to choose reputable suppliers to purchase quality products for production.

To ensure the winter crop production is completed on schedule, the agricultural sector is continuing to review and propose policies to support farmers with seeds and supplies. In addition, localities are encouraging farmers not to leave land fallow, maximizing the potential of the winter crop by planting crops such as corn, potatoes, and vegetables to ensure a timely supply for the market during the year-end and Lunar New Year holidays.
