Following a loud explosion, the 500 kV substation caught fire, illuminating the sky and causing power outages in many areas of Hoa Binh city on the evening of January 17th.

At approximately 7:40 PM, a loud explosion occurred at the 500 kV substation in Tan Thinh ward, Hoa Binh city, belonging to Power Transmission Company 1 (Vietnam National Power Transmission Corporation – EVNNPT). Sparks then flew into the air before the area caught fire.
A resident living about 2 km from the Hoa Binh hydroelectric plant said that the fire illuminated a large area of the sky, and the burning area and the surrounding mountainside were clearly visible from a distance. The fire was completely extinguished in about 15 minutes.

The incident caused no casualties, and power was restored to the affected areas shortly afterward. Vietnam Electricity Corporation stated that Power Transmission Company 1 had disconnected the transformer from the system to ensure the safe operation of the national power transmission system.
EVNNPT is mobilizing backup transformers for the quickest possible replacement to ensure the operation of the power system.
The cause of the incident is currently being investigated by Power Transmission Company 1.
