UN officials warn that food supplies are running low in Gaza, while fuel reserves for powering generators in hospitals have fallen to dangerously low levels.
Israel announced last week that it would not allow humanitarian aid to pass through its territory into Gaza unless Hamas released hostages it had abducted. Aid can pass through Egypt into Gaza via the Rafah crossing in the south, provided it does not fall into Hamas's hands.
