The beauty of springtime culture
On November 28, 1959, beloved Uncle Ho wrote his first article titled "Tree Planting Festival" under the pseudonym Tran Luc, published in Nhan Dan Newspaper No. 2082. In that article, Uncle Ho proposed: "Organizing a Tree Planting Festival as an achievement to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Party." Responding to Uncle Ho's call, the entire Party and people held the first "Tree Planting Festival" during the Lunar New Year of the Rat (1960), and since then, the Tree Planting Festival has become a beautiful cultural tradition of our people every time Tet (Lunar New Year) and spring arrive.
In Hai Phong city, every spring, the city organizes simultaneous tree-planting ceremonies at agencies, units, offices, communes, and wards. The Party Committee, government, and people of the city always actively participate in the "Tree Planting Festival," developing it into a spring tree-planting season.
Along with the movement to plant shade trees, the movement to plant trees for economic development has been actively embraced by members of gardening associations and farmers' associations. According to Ms. Ngo Thi Minh Ha, President of the Hai Phong Gardening Association, every spring, members plant more fruit trees in their home gardens and build organic model gardens to develop the economy and increase income. Farmers' association members develop economic tree planting models in their home gardens, hills, and forests… Typical examples include the planting of dragon fruit, lychee, guava, and longan trees in communes and wards such as Chi Linh, Thanh Ha, An Truong, An Khanh, Do Son, and Luu Kiem…
Thorough preparation

In 2026, the first spring after the city's merger and the establishment of a two-tiered local government model, the spring tree planting movement continues to be maintained and implemented with many new features. Communes, wards, and special zones will simultaneously organize the Spring Tree Planting Festival on February 23rd (the 7th day of the first lunar month) on a commune-wide scale.
At the two locations where the spring tree-planting ceremony is expected to be held, namely Do Son and Tran Nhan Tong wards, preparations for the tree-planting festival are being meticulously carried out, with city leaders in attendance. In Do Son ward, the locality plans to plant 368 purebred pine trees, contributing to greening the landscape and protecting the ecological environment. Before the Lunar New Year, the ward proactively prepared the planting area, cleaned the environment, arranged seedlings, and ensured all conditions were met for the ceremony to be solemn, safe, and effective.
Meanwhile, in Tran Nhan Tong ward, the local authorities chose the Con Son Lake area as the location for the tree planting ceremony. Accordingly, the functional forces leveled and prepared the area, arranged pathways and a tree collection area, ensuring safety and convenience for the spring tree planting event.
To ensure proper preparation for the Spring Tree Planting Ceremony, even before the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse, the Department of Agriculture and Environment sent a delegation of officials to guide and inspect the preparation and organization of the Spring Tree Planting Ceremony in several localities… According to Mr. Mac Dang Manh, Deputy Head of the Hai Phong Forest Protection Department, in implementing the city's plan to launch the Spring Tree Planting Ceremony in the Year of the Horse, all communes, wards, and special zones proactively developed plans to organize the launching ceremony, selected a sufficient number of trees to plant, ensuring compliance with regulations on size; and the seedlings were imported from reputable establishments, guaranteeing quality.

According to the Hai Phong Forest Protection Department, by 2025, the entire city will plant more than 1.2 million trees. This includes 580,000 shade trees and ornamental trees, covering an area of 400 hectares of newly planted forest (equivalent to approximately 640,000 forest trees).
