Playing with peach blossoms on New Year's Day

One might think that peach blossoms are only for the Lunar New Year, but because it's a leap year, the peach blossoms bloomed early. Peach growers in Sa Pa took advantage of this by cutting branches and bringing them to the city as gifts for flower lovers. Many people bought these early-blooming branches to decorate their homes and welcome the Gregorian New Year with joy and happiness.

The small peach stall was bustling with activity on New Year's Day.

Early in the morning, the small corner of Kim Tan market in Lao Cai ward, Lao Cai province, was more bustling than usual. A large crowd gathered around the peach blossom stall of Mr. Giang Van Ly from Ta Phin commune.

The neatly bundled peach blossoms are bursting with delicate pink flowers, their branches laden with buds. The atmosphere of spring seems so close.

Mr. Ly's garden has over 200 peach trees. Some trees bloomed early, so Mr. Ly had to cut branches and bring them to the city to sell. Each branch cost only 100,000 dong, which wasn't expensive, so in a short time, his peach blossom stall was noticeably empty.

People were delighted when they found a peach blossom branch they liked.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoa from Lao Cai ward arrived first and was able to choose a peach blossom branch she liked. She was very satisfied with her choice and even helped the stall owner promote the branch. As a result, the number of customers coming to buy peach blossoms increased day by day.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoa said: "Peach blossoms are a symbol of the Lunar New Year, but even though today is the Gregorian New Year, I still want to put a branch of peach blossoms in a beautiful vase at home with the hope of having many advantages and good fortune in 2026."

Sharing the same fondness for peach blossoms during the New Year, Mr. Le Van Dung from Cam Duong ward went to the market early and, upon spotting a peach blossom stall, chose the branch he liked best. The five-petaled, pale pink peach blossoms from Sa Pa bloomed beautifully, making him admire and exclaim in delight. Anyone who complimented the beauty of his branch filled him with joy, just like the days leading up to the Lunar New Year.

The five-petaled peach blossoms of Sa Pa, tinged with pink, are in full bloom.

For Mr. Ly Van Vinh from Sa Pa ward, bringing peach blossoms to the market during the New Year is a way to sell the early-blooming branches and earn extra income to cover his daily expenses. Every day, he transports three loads of peach blossoms by motorbike to the market in Lao Cai ward to sell.

Mr. Vinh shared: "I sell them at a flat price of 100,000 VND per branch. The price is reasonable, so many people buy them, and the peach blossoms sell out quickly. The hobby of arranging peach blossoms for the New Year contributes to increasing the income for our peach blossom growing households."

Peach blossoms not only adorn the space during Tet (Lunar New Year), but behind their beauty lie layers of meaning passed down through generations about the traditional Tet holiday. The blossoming peach flowers, the delicate pink buds, and the early-sprouting shoots symbolize fertility and growth.

The vibrant and gentle colors of peach blossoms are considered the essence of the five elements, believed to ward off bad luck and usher in a peaceful and happy new year.

The tender young shoots symbolize growth and blossoming, giving us hope for a new year filled with a good and prosperous life, good fortune, and a smooth and successful path ahead.

With that in mind, many people in the wards and communes of Lao Cai celebrate the New Year with blooming peach blossoms, expressing joy and hope for a bright and successful 2026. In addition, the tradition of enjoying peach blossoms on New Year's Day contributes to the consumption of a large quantity of early-blooming peach blossoms, increasing income for peach growers in the highlands.
