US stocks hit record highs.
News that Nvidia will build an artificial intelligence supercomputer for the U.S. Department of Energy, along with investor optimism about earnings results ahead of major companies' reports later this week, led the rally in the U.S. market. Microsoft shares also rose after the company reached an agreement allowing OpenAI to restructure into a public interest company, with Microsoft acquiring a 27% stake in the ChatGPT maker. Investors are also closely monitoring interest rate prospects, especially given the nearly month-long U.S. government shutdown.
In addition to the Fed, a number of central banks are also meeting this week, including the central banks of Japan, Canada, and Europe. According to CME's FedWatch tool, the Fed is widely expected to cut interest rates at the meeting, with the market predicting a 99.9% probability of a 0.25 percentage point reduction. The European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan are expected to keep interest rates unchanged.
Expectations of a Fed interest rate cut trajectory, coupled with recent signs of easing trade tensions between the US and China, have contributed to a surge in market risk appetite, pushing stock prices higher and keeping 10-year US Treasury yields near multi-month lows. US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet on October 30th to discuss a framework that could temporarily halt tougher US tariffs and China's rare earth export restrictions.
Furthermore, the continued US government shutdown has led to a lack of economic data, forcing investors to seek alternative sources to assess the country's economic situation. Preliminary estimates for the first week of the ADP National Employment Report show that US private sector jobs increased by an average of 14,250 in the four weeks ending October 11th.
Meanwhile, the group of seven major technology companies, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Apple, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, are expected to release their earnings reports this week. Investors will be closely watching these reports to assess the very high valuations of these companies.
