Providing healthcare for the people at the grassroots level.

Dr. Dao Thanh Dan, Head of Mong Tho A Health Station in Thanh Loc commune, said: “Over the past year, the health station has provided medical examinations and treatment to 14,225 people, achieving 107% of the target. In implementing the malnutrition prevention and control program, the rate of malnutrition based on weight is over 8.8%, and the rate of malnutrition based on height is 11.9%. The expanded immunization program for children under 1 year old has achieved 106% immunization, and the tetanus vaccination rate for pregnant women has reached 94.2%. The elderly health care program has received attention; the health station, in coordination with the Thanh Loc Health Center, organizes screening for some common diseases in the elderly twice a year for 155 elderly people, achieving 100%. In addition, other programs have all achieved over 95% of their targets.”

Attending the medical examination and medication distribution for the elderly at Mong Tho A Health Station, the elderly residents shared their joy at receiving care and attention from the Party, the State, the local government, and the health sector. “Being old and suffering from many illnesses, I have to go to Kien Giang General Hospital every month for checkups on blood pressure and diabetes, and to get medication. Therefore, having health care programs like this in the locality is very convenient for the people,” shared Ms. Le Thi Quy (64 years old), residing in Hoa Thuan 1 hamlet.

Mr. Do Van Tam (75 years old), residing in Hoa Thuan 2 hamlet, expressed: “With the free health screening program at the health station, the whole neighborhood happily went together and we are grateful for the local health sector's concern. Elderly people like us now suffer from various chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma… If we receive good monthly healthcare at the commune health station and are given sufficient medication, we won't have to crowd into hospitals anymore.”

Dr. Dao Thanh Dan said: “Eighty elderly people aged 60 and above received screening for common diseases in the elderly, blood sugar tests, abdominal ultrasounds, electrocardiograms, etc., and were given free medication. The total cost for medical examinations, medication, and transportation support for the elderly was nearly 26 million VND, from the funding of Project 7, the program for healthcare for the elderly and ethnic minorities, and donations.”

Implementing population control measures.

Dr. Chung Tan Thinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, stated: “ An Giang has implemented many solutions to carry out the Vietnam Population Strategy until 2030 in the province, achieving many remarkable results such as: maintaining the total fertility rate; reducing the gender ratio at birth; maintaining a relatively good replacement fertility rate, and the sex ratio at birth is being controlled at 108-109 boys per 100 girls. The prenatal and neonatal screening program has been implemented effectively compared to other provinces in the Mekong Delta, and has been commended by the Population Department and the Center for Prenatal and Neonatal Screening and Diagnosis, Can Tho Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital.”

“The province has achieved many accomplishments in population and development work, especially in proactively and creatively diversifying solutions to improve the quality of the population in the new situation, contributing to a strong transformation in people's awareness and behavior in implementing population and development policies in the area,” shared Dr. Nguyen Hong Nam - Head of the Provincial Population Department.

At Chau Thanh Health Center - Kien Giang, Head of the Population and Development Department Tran Thanh Tung said: “The center has effectively implemented population work. Specifically, the unit maintains the project “Intervention to reduce gender imbalance at birth” in three communes: Thanh Loc, Chau Thanh, and Binh An. More than 50 group meetings were organized to disseminate information in the community to women of childbearing age, women who have only daughters, women whose first child is a girl, and influential people in the community. Information was provided to 525 pregnant women for ultrasound examinations and counseling on prenatal and newborn screening…”

In addition, localities are focusing on health education and awareness campaigns during peak periods such as the Food Safety Action Month, World Tuberculosis Day, World Health Day, and World Malaria Day. Simultaneously, they are integrating group meetings, small-group communication, banner displays, and loudspeaker announcements to meet the requirements of population and development work in the new context.
