New Movement in Than Sa

Based on the merger with Thuong Nung commune, Than Sa commune now has 11 hamlets, a total natural area of ​​over 146km2 and a population of 6,010 people. In recent years, poverty reduction and new rural construction in the locality have made remarkable progress. From a difficult area, Than Sa's appearance has become increasingly prosperous thanks to suitable production models, and people's lives have been improved both materially and spiritually.

During the past term, the poverty rate in Than Sa decreased by an average of 7.2% per year. People proactively applied technical advances in production, timely prevented pests and diseases and converted to high-yield crop varieties.

The system of dams and intra-field canals is invested in and regularly repaired to ensure irrigation water for agricultural production.

Thanks to that, grain output reached more than 2,450 tons/year; vegetable output of all kinds was about 840 tons; fresh tea buds reached 95 tons.

Livestock farming has developed in a diversified direction, many households have boldly invested in raising buffaloes, breeding cows, poultry and aquatic products. Some households have formed small-scale farm models, opening up ways to increase income.

The total livestock, poultry and meat output of the commune increases from 3 to 5% per year; aquaculture alone reaches an average of more than 10 tons per year.

Mr. Tran Van Ty, Head of the Community Production Group of the commercial sturgeon farming model in Trung Son hamlet, said: With capital and technical support from poverty reduction programs, the model has brought in hundreds of millions of dong in profits in the past 2 years and opened up a new direction of production. After the recent flood, we are making recommendations to continue to restore and develop this potential aquaculture model.

Similarly, the comprehensive economic model of Mr. Luong Van Thuong’s family in Trung Thanh hamlet is a testament to the dynamism of the people. From trading agricultural materials, combining buffalo and pig farming and milling services, his family has a revenue of hundreds of millions of dong each year.

Mr. Thuong shared: In addition to production activities, I also invested in harvesters to serve the harvest for the people. The average total income is about 400 million VND/year.

Taking advantage of the land, Than Sa promotes the movement of raising cattle and buffalo for breeding, growing mulberry trees to raise silkworms and developing the forest economy. In Ngoc Son hamlet, a cooperative has put mulberry trees into production and provided seeds to the people. Mr. Duong Van Chien, a resident of Ngoc Son hamlet, said: We have high expectations for this tree. The cooperative buys mulberry leaves at a price of 3,000-5,000 VND/kg, creating a stable source of income for the people.

At the same time, the model of growing medicinal plants in the buffer zone of Than Sa - Phuong Hoang Nature Reserve has also brought positive signals. Since 2023, 12 households have been supported to grow 3.1 hectares of Morinda officinalis and Purple Atractylodes Rhizome, which has initially developed well. The policy of paying for forest environmental services has helped many families have more income and stick with forest protection work. To date, the commune's forest cover rate has reached 82.4%, among the highest in the province.

Determining that economic development must go hand in hand with infrastructure improvement, Than Sa effectively implemented national target programs. Many essential works were invested and upgraded such as roads, schools, medical stations, offices and cultural houses. The domestic water supply system was expanded to meet the needs of the people.

In particular, the commune has completed the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses for 143 households; many houses have been repaired and rebuilt, bringing a more spacious appearance to the mountainous area. The resettlement area of ​​Tan Kim hamlet is being accelerated to soon arrange for people to move out of the dangerous area.

The above results demonstrate the determination of the Party Committee, the government and the efforts of the people in the journey of sustainable poverty reduction. Than Sa is gradually narrowing the development gap, creating an important foundation to continue building new rural areas and improving people's lives.
