Following its merger with Thuong Nung commune, Than Sa commune now comprises 11 hamlets, with a total natural area of ​​over 146 square kilometers and a population of 6,010 people. In recent years, poverty reduction and rural development efforts in the locality have made significant progress. From a previously disadvantaged area, Than Sa's appearance has improved significantly thanks to appropriate production models, and the lives of its people have been enhanced both materially and spiritually.

During the past term, the poverty rate in Than Sa decreased by an average of 7.2% per year. People proactively applied technological advancements to production, promptly controlled pests and diseases, and switched to high-yield crop varieties.

The system of reservoirs and irrigation canals in the fields is regularly invested in and repaired, ensuring water supply for agricultural production.

As a result, grain production reached over 2,450 tons/year; vegetable production was approximately 840 tons; and fresh tea leaf production reached 95 tons.

Livestock farming is developing in a diversified direction, with many households boldly investing in breeding buffaloes and cows, poultry, and aquaculture. Some households have formed small-scale farm models, opening up avenues for increasing income.

The total number of livestock and poultry and the output of meat for sale in the commune increase by 3 to 5% each year; aquaculture production alone averages more than 10 tons per year.

Mr. Tran Van Ty, head of the community production group for the commercial sturgeon farming model in Trung Son hamlet, said: "With capital and technical support from poverty reduction programs, the model has brought in hundreds of millions of dong in profit over the past two years and opened up a new direction for production. After the recent floods, we are proposing to continue restoring and developing this promising aquaculture model."

Similarly, the integrated economic model of Mr. Luong Van Thuong's family in Trung Thanh hamlet is a testament to the dynamism of the local people. By combining the business of agricultural supplies with buffalo and pig farming and milling services, his family earns hundreds of millions of dong annually.

Mr. Thuong shared: "Besides production activities, I also invested in harvesting machines to help farmers with their harvests. The average total income is about 400 million VND per year."

Taking advantage of the land resources, Than Sa has promoted the breeding of buffalo and cattle, the cultivation of mulberry trees for silkworm farming, and the development of forest-based economic activities. In Ngoc Son hamlet, a cooperative has introduced mulberry trees into production and provided seedlings to the people. Mr. Duong Van Chien, a resident of Ngoc Son hamlet, said: "We have high hopes for this crop. The cooperative buys mulberry leaves at prices ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 VND/kg, creating a stable source of income for the people."

Simultaneously, the model of cultivating medicinal plants in the buffer zone of the Than Sa - Phuong Hoang Nature Reserve has also yielded positive results. Since 2023, 12 households have received support to cultivate 3.1 hectares of Codonopsis pilosula and Rhus chinensis, which have initially developed well. The policy of paying for forest environmental services has helped many families earn additional income and become more involved in forest protection. To date, the forest cover rate of the commune has reached 82.4%, among the highest in the province.

Recognizing that economic development must go hand in hand with infrastructure improvement, Than Sa has effectively implemented national target programs. Many essential facilities have been invested in and upgraded, such as roads, schools, health stations, offices, and cultural centers. The domestic water supply system has been expanded to meet the needs of the people.

In particular, the commune has achieved the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses for 143 households; many houses have been repaired or rebuilt, bringing a more presentable appearance to the mountainous area. The resettlement area in Tan Kim hamlet is being expedited to soon relocate residents from the dangerous area.

These results demonstrate the determination of the Party committee and government, and the efforts of the people in the journey towards sustainable poverty reduction. Than Sa is gradually narrowing the development gap, creating an important foundation for continuing to build new rural areas and improve the lives of the people.
