Martial could leave AEK. |
After 23 appearances for AEK Athens since the start of the season, Martial has scored 9 goals and provided 2 assists. Compared to his lackluster performance at Manchester United, this is an encouraging step forward.
Martial's current life in Greece, however, is in stark contrast to the start of the season. The French striker is the highest-paid player in AEK's history (£2.9m a year), but has made few contributions in recent times.
Martial was sent off in a clash with Olympiacos on April 14. Despite leaving a positive mark on the pitch, Martial’s behaviour in tense situations has forced AEK’s management to reconsider the striker’s position.
In addition, injury problems also affected Martial's performance. The striker had to miss 7 matches from early February to April. This made the management worried that Martial's frequent absence from competition like at MU would repeat.
Greek media say AEK have started looking for a buyer for Martial and will let him go if a suitable offer comes in. The current contract between the two sides runs until June 2027. Transfermarkt currently values Martial at 9 million euros.
