The "folk" method that users whisper to each other when accidentally dropping an iPhone into the sink, swimming pool or toilet is usually to dry the phone and put it in a box of rice to... absorb the moisture.
To clarify this, Apple has officially warned users not to do so because it can cause more harm than good to the iPhone.
"Do not put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so can cause small grains of rice to damage your iPhone" - The Verge quoted Apple's recommendation.

Experts say rice can prevent moisture from damaging some products, but it doesn't have the magical ability to draw moisture out of electronics.
"When the iPhone is wet, users should not dry the phone with a hair dryer or external heat source, nor should they insert foreign objects such as cotton swabs or tissues into the charging port. In particular, users should not attempt to charge the phone while it is wet," Apple added.
Instead, Apple recommends turning off the phone, placing it face down or upright to drain excess liquid, and placing it in a dry, well-ventilated area. After at least 30 minutes, try charging it with a Lightning or USB-C cable.
If you notice any liquid in the connector or under the cable, leave the device in a dry, well-ventilated area for "up to a day" and plug it back in.
If the phone is dry but still not charging, unplug the cable and reconnect it. If the above methods still fail, you should contact Apple support for advice.
