A nightmare for Premier League newcomers.

The 2024/25 Premier League season saw poor performances from Southampton, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town.

Southampton were the earliest team to be relegated in a 38-round Premier League season.

All three teams that returned to the top flight of English football this season are facing serious difficulties. With Southampton and Leicester already relegated, Ipswich is also on its way back to the Championship.

If that happens, the trio of newly promoted teams in the 2024/25 Premier League will become the worst relegation group in the league's history. Currently, these three clubs have only earned a combined 50 points from 99 matches.

Compared to the previous lowest record – 66 points earned by Burnley, Luton, and Sheffield United combined last season – the picture looks even bleaker.

Southampton have 11 points, Leicester have 18 points, and Ipswich currently have 21 points. All three teams have a combined total of 15 more Premier League matches to play this season, but the likelihood of them accumulating 16 points is very low, considering their performance so far this season.

All three newly promoted teams combined for a total of only 10 wins, while conceding a staggering 222 goals. Southampton became the earliest team to be relegated in a 38-round season, officially dropping out in round 31. Leicester set an unwanted record with a run of nine consecutive home games without scoring a goal.

Ipswich, currently 15 points behind safety with only five games remaining, are almost certain to follow the other two teams. Compared to previous seasons, this decline is particularly severe. In the 2022/23 season, relegated teams averaged 30 points each. This season, the average is currently only 16.7 points.

Despite heavy spending (Ipswich and Southampton each spent over £100 million), these clubs have shown poor recruitment, demonstrating weak attacking and defensive capabilities and instability in the coaching position.

If Ipswich are relegated, it will be the second consecutive season in which all three promoted teams have been immediately relegated, a phenomenon not seen since the 1997/98 season. The 2024/25 season could serve as a cautionary tale for newly promoted Premier League teams, and highlight the widening gap in quality within the league.
