Does anyone still remember Berbatov?

There are strikers who are remembered not only for their goals, but also for their style. Dimitar Berbatov is one of them.

Berbatov previously played for Manchester United.

The former Bulgarian striker, who once dominated the Premier League with his elegant style and artistry, is now 44 years old. But Berbatov's story doesn't end when he leaves the pitch – it continues with another aspiration: to change the face of football in his homeland.

A gentleman on the football field.

In the memory of English football fans, Berbatov is a symbol of composure and efficiency. He won the Premier League Golden Boot while playing for Manchester United, after impressive years with Tottenham.

Berbatov previously rose through the ranks at Bayer Leverkusen, where he briefly played alongside Landon Donovan. After the Premier League, the Bulgarian striker embarked on an adventure at Monaco before ending his career at PAOK. Everywhere he played, he left behind the image of a "gentleman" on the pitch: not flashy, not explosively fast, but possessing feet that knew how to transform the simple into art.

Furthermore, Berbatov's European mark was further solidified when he scored against both Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Champions League. With the Bulgarian national team, he stands alongside the legendary Hristo Bonev, both holding the record for scoring 48 goals.

The difference is that Berbatov needed only 78 matches to reach that number, almost 20 fewer than Bonev. He participated in Euro 2004, once facing Spain, but failed to score. Nevertheless, for the people of Bulgaria, Berbatov will forever remain the greatest attacking icon of a generation.

After retiring from playing, Berbatov entered the world of football politics .

While Berbatov was known for his calm demeanor on the pitch, he displayed a fierce determination off the field. After retiring, the former Manchester United striker did not choose a coaching career like many of his colleagues, but instead embarked on a more challenging journey: rebuilding Bulgarian football from the ground up.

Berbatov ran twice for the presidency of the Bulgarian Football Federation (BFU). In 2021, he narrowly lost to incumbent president Borislav Mihaylov – 230 votes compared to 241. Two years later, in 2023, he tried again but was defeated by Georgi Ivanov with 181 votes, 54 fewer than his opponent.

Looking at his two failures, one might say Berbatov hasn't been successful in football politics. But if you read his proposals carefully, you understand that he chose the difficult path: fundamentally changing a conservative system.

Berbatov's election platform focused on player development, improving coaching skills, and upgrading infrastructure. These weren't empty promises, but rather a frank assessment of the current state of Bulgarian football – a sport with a proud history that is now struggling in the lower echelons of European football.

Berbatov is one of the few players who hasn't been involved in any scandals.

A desire for change

Alongside this, Berbatov continues to work diligently with the "Dimitar Berbatov Foundation," where he supports the development of Bulgarian children and youth. This foundation not only encourages football but also extends to many creative and artistic fields, affirming the philosophy that a strong football team requires a well-rounded and confident young generation. He also collaborates with orphanages, helping disadvantaged children have opportunities to thrive through sports and education .

Compared to his brilliant on-field career, Berbatov's post-field journey has been harsher and less glamorous. But it reflects the spirit of a man who refuses to settle for mediocrity.

Berbatov, who once thrilled Old Trafford fans with a hat-trick against Liverpool, now wants to breathe new life into his homeland's football. Despite his electoral defeats, he remains confident that Bulgarian football can change, provided there are people who dare to think and dare to act.

In the modern world of football, where many former stars choose roles as commentators or coaches, Berbatov shows a different path: football politics, community development, and supporting the younger generation. Perhaps that journey will be long and arduous, but it is worth it for Bulgarian fans to be proud that Dimitar Berbatov – the striker who once commanded the respect of the entire Premier League – is still fighting, not just with goals, but with a desire for change.
