Biden's son reaches plea agreement.

Hunter Biden reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice , agreeing to plead guilty to two charges alleging that he intentionally failed to pay income taxes.

According to court documents released today, Hunter Biden reached a plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding two charges of intentionally failing to pay income taxes. The charges stemmed from a 2018 investigation by Delaware prosecutor David Weiss into the tax affairs of President Joe Biden's son. Hunter is believed to have paid more than $1 million in overdue taxes in 2020.

A plea deal allows the court to convict without trial, in exchange for the defendant pleading guilty to a lesser charge than the prosecution's proposed sentence. This agreement must be approved by the court. According to the Washington Post , Hunter intends to serve two years of probation.

Hunter also reached a pretrial diversion (PTD) agreement regarding the charge of illegal possession of weapons while under the influence of drugs, which the U.S. Department of Justice brought against him in October 2018.

PTD allows the transfer of defendants with certain charges from the judicial system to a supervisory and service system administered by the U.S. Probation Service. When certain conditions are met, the corresponding charges are dropped. Otherwise, the case is transferred back to the judicial system for processing.

Legal experts believe that the aforementioned charges are highly unlikely to result in Hunter facing a prison sentence.

"Through these two agreements, I understand that the five-year investigation into my client has been resolved," said Christopher Clark, Hunter's lawyer. "Hunter understands that it is important to take responsibility for the mistakes he made during his turbulent and drug-addicted period."

"The President and First Lady love and support their son as he continues to rebuild his life. We will not have any further comment," the White House said.

Hunter is President Biden's only son, after his eldest son, Beau Biden, died in 2015 from brain cancer. Hunter founded consulting and investment firms, worked in private equity, and held boards of directors of various organizations, including several companies in China and Ukraine.

Since 2019, former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have attacked Hunter for his dealings with Ukraine and China. President Biden has consistently stated his trust in his son Hunter and called the accusations against him "dirty tricks."
