Billionaire Musk was blocked from accessing the US Treasury 's payment system.
The Hill reported that the White House on February 8 defended the decision of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) to significantly cut funding for universities and research centers.
The NIH announced a day earlier that it would limit funding for “indirect” research costs to 15%, down from the 60% some institutions currently receive. The cuts, effective immediately, will save the budget more than $4 billion a year, the NIH said in a statement. The US health agency stressed that the decision is to ensure that government funding is spent on the direct costs of scientific research.
Only USAID programs that prioritize US interests will be maintained.
The White House said on February 8 that the indirect funding costs under the new framework are in line with what universities and research centers receive from private organizations. The cuts include maintenance, equipment purchases and administrative support. The units at risk said the indirect costs are used to pay for essential tools to support research.
Scientists warn the cuts could impact research on cancer and neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Researchers have raised concerns in recent weeks about a lack of transparency as the US government removed much of the epidemiological data from government health websites.

In another development, US President Donald Trump on February 8 revoked the security clearances of senior officials in the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden, including former Secretary of State Antony Blinken and former national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Mr. Biden also had his security clearance revoked, a mechanism that gives US officials access to classified information and protected locations.
Regarding the fate of the social networking application TikTok in the US, billionaire Elon Musk, the world's richest man and an advisor to Mr. Trump, said that Mr. Musk has no intention of buying this platform. AFP quoted billionaire Musk on February 8 as affirming that he does not use TikTok and has no plans if he owns this application.
In addition, AFP reported yesterday that US federal judge A. Engelmayer has just issued a temporary emergency order banning billionaire Elon Musk's government reform group from accessing personal and financial data of millions of Americans stored at the US Treasury Department. Effective until the hearing on February 14, the ban also states that anyone who has accessed data from the US Treasury Department's records since Mr. Trump took office must "immediately destroy any copies of documents that have been downloaded."
