Around the early 1980s, the site of what is now Luu Huu Phuoc Park was still a barren, overgrown wasteland. Hau Giang Province then undertook land reclamation and construction, transforming it into a park that opened in 1989. Many people commonly refer to this park as the April 30th Park or the central park of Can Tho City. In 1991, the central park of Can Tho City was officially renamed Luu Huu Phuoc Park. In the same year, O Mon Town High School was also renamed Luu Huu Phuoc High School.
Since its opening, the park has attracted a large number of locals and tourists to experience, visit, and enjoy recreational activities. The park is surrounded by a fence. Structures such as the C-shaped house and the towering Ferris wheel have become cherished memories for many generations of Can Tho residents. Children enjoy the circular train ride, slides, and horseback riding. There is a large elephant statue placed in front of the park, and inside there are giraffes, bears, and a lake. At one point, there was even a "house of laughter" service. From around 2000 to 2009, the park was also a popular destination for experiences such as watching comedy films, eating ice cream, working out, learning to dance, and rhythmic dancing. Along with Ninh Kieu Wharf and Bai Cat Beach, Luu Huu Phuoc Park was once a famous destination in Can Tho.
In 2014, Luu Huu Phuoc Park began renovations, giving it a more spacious and modern appearance. The main entrance to the park is prominently shaped like a guitar, and in the center stands a bronze statue of Professor, Musician, and Academician Luu Huu Phuoc. Luu Huu Phuoc Park is currently a popular venue for important programs and events in Can Tho City.
