Around the early 2000s, Xang Thoi Lake was a large, polluted water spinach pond, and people living along the Xang Thoi canal and lake lived in damp stilt houses. The renovation project of the Xang Thoi canal and lake commenced on October 20, 2006, and was inaugurated on August 26, 2009, with the function of regulating domestic water supply, improving the environment, and beautifying the urban landscape of Can Tho City.
The area around Xáng Thổi canal and lake is now spacious and bustling, with many trees planted along the lake's edge, a lighting system, and numerous restaurants and eateries. Particularly noteworthy is the lake's connection to Đề Thám street, with its densely packed shops and restaurants, earning it the title of "Xáng Thổi Lake Food Street." The lake's scenery is even more beautiful at sunrise or sunset, with the stunning Viễn Quang pagoda visible in the foreground. Along Huỳnh Cương street, bordering the Xáng Thổi canal and spillway, there's a market selling flowers and ornamental plants during Tet (Vietnamese New Year), especially yellow apricot blossoms, as large boats can easily dock in the canal.
