The certificate awarding ceremony for Mrs. Hakoishi's record took place locally, with the presence and congratulations of her neighbors and regular customers.

"My life has been difficult since childhood, but I am truly happy," shared the elderly woman who just became a record holder.

Ms. Hakoishi began her apprenticeship at a Tokyo barbershop at the age of 14. By 1936, she had obtained her barber's license.

Later, she and her husband opened a small hair salon. Her husband was also a barber. After the salon was destroyed in an air raid, she evacuated to her hometown in Tochigi. Her husband also died in the war. She then opened another small hair salon in her hometown, working and raising her two young children.

In March 2021, she participated as a torchbearer in the Beijing Olympic Games.

According to Kyodo News, although her knee pain has reduced her clientele, she still cuts hair whenever someone requests it.

"Some people even travel from far away to see me for haircuts, so I want to continue doing this job for as long as possible," said Ms. Hakoishi.
