"If you stop studying, you will feel discouraged and confused, but this is an opportunity for you to rediscover your inner strength - the spirit of self-learning."
These are the heartfelt thoughts shared by Mr. Nguyen Minh Quy, Principal of Mac Dinh Chi High School ( Hai Phong ), in an open letter to students and parents before the effective date of Circular 29/2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training on tutoring and supplementary classes - February 14th.
According to Mr. Quy, students have always been accustomed to teachers reviewing, reinforcing, and guiding them through extra tutoring sessions. Therefore, stopping extra tutoring at school will cause anxiety and worry for the vast majority of students, especially those in their final year.
"There will certainly be disappointment, confusion, and even significant difficulties, but this is an opportunity for the students to rediscover their inner strength: the spirit of self-learning," Mr. Quy wrote in the letter.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Quy, Principal of Mac Dinh Chi High School, Hai Phong.
The principal argued that self-learning is not only a skill, but also a foundation for developing three important qualities:
First, self-confidence is the key to success. In class, everything is meticulously prepared by the teachers. Extra tutoring helps students follow the established path at a leisurely pace. Now, each student must steer their own ship.
Teacher Quy hopes his students will believe in themselves that they will find suitable learning resources, systematize their knowledge, and find solutions. Believe in yourselves and don't be afraid of failure, because every setback is a valuable lesson for growth.
Secondly, self-discipline – the guiding light of the learning path. Self-discipline means that students proactively study without needing reminders. It's the ability to manage time, seek out new knowledge, master technology to access information, and persevere with their goals. Self-discipline not only helps students learn better, but also cultivates a sense of responsibility, a crucial element for success in life.
Third, self-control – a firm footing in the face of challenges. Self-control helps students manage their thoughts, emotions, and actions. A self-controlled person will not be swept away by negative influences from friends or social media. Self-control will give us independence and unwavering willpower on the path ahead. While in the past, difficult problems could be solved by waiting for teachers to explain them again during extra classes, now students must find their own solutions.
Teacher Quy reminded his students that no matter how difficult things get, their teachers will always be there to guide and help them when needed. The important thing is that students need to be confident to overcome anxiety, self-disciplined, and independent so as not to lose themselves.
"Students can connect and help each other in their studies. Each individual in a group with shared goals will feel empowered and steadfast. Thus, by conquering the spirit of self-learning, students will discover their own limitless potential ," the principal wrote.
From the perspective of the teachers, Mr. Quy understands that it will not be easy without extra tutoring. Life and work will certainly be difficult and challenging. Difficult because many of our students do not yet have the habit of self-study and need more time to develop it. Difficult because teachers' incomes will decrease significantly.
"I understand that teaching has never been easy, and tutoring is even more challenging. Each teacher has truly worked hard and received what they deserve, including patience, perseverance, encouragement, and care for their students—qualities that the term 'tutoring' itself can never fully express. Even without tutoring, we are still ready to answer questions and provide support, either directly or online, whenever possible," Mr. Quy expressed.
Expressing his understanding and empathy to his colleagues, the principal hoped that the teachers would always be a united team, overcoming difficulties and challenges together, so that the teaching profession would not only be about patience and hardship, but also a source of pride, serenity, and nobility.
