Kasper Schmeichel is considering retirement. |
At 39, the son of legendary Peter Schmeichel admits his physical condition is no longer up to par. Kasper Schmeichel once had a proud career, but persistent injuries are forcing him to face the most difficult decision of his career.
"I may have played my last game. I've been involved in football since I was very young, so facing this is really hard to accept," Schmeichel said.
This information comes after Schmeichel underwent a thorough examination by doctors earlier this week. The results showed he suffered a serious shoulder fracture and will need to undergo two surgeries. The recovery process is expected to take about a year, meaning that by the time he returns, Schmeichel may be in his 40s.
The former Leicester goalkeeper has been struggling with a shoulder injury since last year. The situation has recently worsened. His last appearance for Celtic was on February 22nd, when the team lost to Hibernian. Since then, the Danish goalkeeper has been unable to play.
Although no official decision has been made, the British press suggests that Schmeichel's retirement from football is highly likely.
Schmeichel was a key member of Leicester City's Premier League winning squad in the 2015/16 season. He made his debut for the Danish national team in 2013 and has played 120 matches.
