Plant Protection Department informs about temporary suspension of DAP fertilizer import from Korea

In the first quarter of 2023, fertilizer imports decreased by 46.2%, the fertilizer industry faced difficulties for 6 months, imported fertilizer prices decreased by 27.3% compared to the same period.

According to the Plant Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), DAP is a fertilizer that must comply with Vietnamese regulations and must undergo state quality inspection before import.

In 2022, Vietnam imported 164 batches of DAP, with a volume of over 304,000 tons, of which 5 batches were imported from Korea, with a volume of nearly 24,000 tons.

In the first 8 months of 2023, Vietnam imported a total of 157 batches of DAP, with a volume of over 248,000 tons, of which 5 batches were imported from Korea, with a volume of over 15,000 tons.

Reviewing the records of 3 batches of DAP imported from Korea in June and July 2023 and the test results provided by Vinacontrol Inspection Company Limited in Ho Chi Minh City, the batches of DAP imported from Korea had the lowest total nitrogen content (Nts) of 17.7%, the lowest effective phosphorus content (P2O5hh) of 45.7%, the highest moisture content of 0.68% and the Cadmium (Cd) content all gave results

Thus, according to Vietnam's regulations, the DAP shipments imported in 2023, including the 3 most recent DAP shipments imported from Korea, all meet the regulations on quality indicators (Nts, P2O5hh, moisture) and Cadmium content indicators (Vietnam stipulates that Cadmium indicators must not exceed 12mg/kg).

At the same time, it is said that these shipments are subject to state inspection of the quality of imported fertilizers before customs clearance. Suppose, in case the Cadmium content or any other index in DAP fertilizer does not meet the standards, the goods will be required to be re-exported.

According to the Plant Protection Department, in addition to taking samples for quality testing at ports and border gates, specialized agencies in provinces and cities also regularly organize inspections and checks of fertilizer production and trading activities in the area.

Up to now, the Plant Protection Department has not received any reports about DAP fertilizer in general and DAP imported from Korea being of poor quality.

Therefore, the Plant Protection Department affirms that the information about temporarily suspending the import of DAP fertilizer products from the Korean market is incorrect.

The Plant Protection Department said that all fertilizer import activities in general, and DAP fertilizer in particular, from Korea and other markets are strictly managed and monitored in accordance with the Law on Cultivation and guiding documents, including the Government 's decree on fertilizer management.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, each year our country needs about 700,000 - 900,000 tons of DAP fertilizer as raw material for NPK production and direct use. Of which, 3 domestic factories can meet about 60 - 70%, the rest depends on imports.

China, South Korea, Russia… are the world's leading powers in DAP production and export, and these are also Vietnam's three main import markets for DAP.
