On February 14th, in an interview with a reporter from the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department stated that recently, there have been instances in the city of individuals impersonating tax officials and tax officers to commit acts of property theft.

Therefore, the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department continues to reiterate warnings to taxpayers about the tactics used by scammers, even though it has not yet received any information about taxpayers falling victim to these scams.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department, the most common scam involves fraudsters calling taxpayers to offer assistance in installing tax-related applications on their computers and mobile phones; inviting taxpayers to meetings, guiding them on how to declare tax exemptions and reductions, and using their citizen identification cards to contact tax authorities to receive tax refunds…

"Specifically, some individuals have requested taxpayers to provide information such as: access accounts for tax payment applications via eTax Mobile, tax identification numbers, citizen identification cards, business registration certificates…; invitations regarding updates on value-added tax reduction policies, personal income tax refunds… and to declare information on the electronic tax website to receive electronic documents," Mr. Dung added.

To avoid falling into scams, Mr. Dung advises taxpayers not to follow the instructions in any invitation letters they receive. Taxpayers should also note that the official websites of tax authorities use the "https" protocol and the Vietnamese national domain ".vn". For example, the website of the General Department of Taxation has the domain: https://www.gdt.gov.vn; the website of the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department has the domain: https://tphcm.gdt.gov.vn.

"Specifically, taxpayers should not provide information on websites other than the official websites of the tax authorities. Businesses, households, and individuals should contact the tax authority managing their unit directly or call the official phone numbers of the Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department listed on the website https://tphcm.gdt.gov.vn/ or the General Department of Taxation on the website https://www.gdt.gov.vn/ to report issues and receive timely support," Mr. Dung said.
