A meaningful journey

In response to the Prime Minister's emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide in 2025" and the call of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and the initiative of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee, with the message "Millions of loving hearts - thousands of happy homes," the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in Long Xuyen City was launched in mid-December 2024.

“The local authorities have determined that implementing the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses will not only improve the quality of life for the people but also strengthen the people's trust in the Party and the State. Accordingly, the city has promptly established a steering committee, operational regulations, and assigned specific tasks to its members. At the same time, it has proactively developed an implementation plan and decisively directed the program with a high sense of responsibility. Furthermore, the city's steering committee regularly monitors, reviews, and inspects the implementation to ensure the program runs smoothly, effectively, and transparently,” informed Huynh Quoc Thai, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Long Xuyen City Party Committee.

Through a review, the city identified 60 households eligible for support from the program (18 houses to be repaired, 42 houses to be newly built), including 4 policy beneficiary households. With a sense of urgency and seriousness, the Steering Committee for the Eradication of Temporary and Dilapidated Houses (referred to as the Steering Committee) of Long Xuyen City mobilized the entire political system, leveraging the role of the city's and ward/commune Fatherland Front as the core of solidarity, connecting businesses, organizations, and philanthropists inside and outside the locality, creating a significant resource to build new houses and repair 60 houses.

With the spirit of "everyone contributes what they can," the contributions of charitable organizations, individuals, and people from all walks of life in Long Xuyen City, whether large or small, are all "bricks of compassion," building sturdy houses and bringing joy and happiness to many families. Long Xuyen City is the first locality in the province to complete the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses with a proactive and creative approach... Now, 60 poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged households in Long Xuyen City have spacious and sturdy houses to weather the rainy and sunny seasons, giving them the motivation to improve their lives.

As a result, by March 28th, the city had completed and handed over 60 houses, with a total cost of over 4.3 billion VND (including funds mobilized by the City and ward/commune Steering Committees; support for war veterans; and matching funds from beneficiary households). The completed houses meet the requirements regarding area and construction structure, and are fully equipped with auxiliary facilities, ensuring a quality of life for residents. “During the implementation of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the Long Xuyen City Steering Committee has independently connected with sponsors inside and outside the area to mobilize social funding, not using the 5% savings from the local budget's recurrent expenditures in 2024 and not receiving support from the province so that the province can focus its funds on supporting other more disadvantaged localities,” said Tran Minh Duc, Chairman of the Long Xuyen City People's Committee.

Sharing about the 27-day journey to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Chairman of My Khanh Commune People's Committee Ho Van Lanh said that on February 26th, the commune held a ceremony to receive funding and commence construction of 8 new houses for poor and near-poor households in the area. To ensure the progress and quality of the project, the commune's Steering Committee regularly visited each household to monitor, support, and urge the construction unit. After 27 days of intensive construction (from February 26th to March 23rd), the 8 houses were completed, with a total construction cost of 570 million VND (of which the city's Steering Committee supported 480 million VND, the commune mobilized 20 million VND, and the rest was contributed by the families).

Spreading the spirit of compassion

Besides the efforts, dedication, initiative, and sense of responsibility of the Steering Committee for the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses in Long Xuyen City, there is also the joint effort and contribution of all levels and sectors, the responsibility of households, especially the contributions of philanthropists and businesses. Mr. Chau Viet Long (residing in Binh Khanh Ward, Long Xuyen City) shared: “The amount of money contributed is not just a number, but a part of the dedication and responsibility of businesses towards the community. New roofs will be the starting point for the dreams and good plans of the people. Hopefully, this small act will spread the spirit of 'mutual support and compassion,' so that we can all build a better society together.”

The leaders of Long Xuyen City commended and expressed gratitude to the philanthropists who contributed to the success of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.

“With a sense of responsibility and compassion, our company is determined to join hands with the government and people of Long Xuyen City to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses. We understand that a sturdy roof is not only a place to shelter from the rain and sun, but also the foundation for a stable and happy life for each family. Therefore, the company actively contributes both materially and spiritually, helping to bring decent homes to families facing many difficulties,” shared Tran Thanh Trung, Deputy Director of An Giang Petroleum Company Limited.

“The completed and handed-over houses have brought joy and security to disadvantaged families. The achievement of the goal of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses not only demonstrates the local government's concern for the people's lives, but also the collective effort of the entire community. The valuable funding from charitable organizations and individuals is managed and used appropriately by the local authorities, making a significant contribution to social welfare and the development of My Khanh commune,” said Ho Van Lanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of My Khanh commune, with enthusiasm.

The Party's will is in harmony with the people's aspirations.

The Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Council of An Giang, Le Van Nung, called on businesses and philanthropists to continue paying attention and providing support to help complete the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses in the province as planned. He also expressed his hope that the families receiving new houses would take good care of them, work diligently to improve their lives, and contribute to the development of their homeland and country.

The Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Council of An Giang, Le Van Nung, shared: “Through attending groundbreaking ceremonies, inspecting the progress of projects to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, and directly encouraging and visiting the people who benefit from the program, I felt the joy, excitement, and happiness of each household when they received attention, care, and financial support from the Party and the State to build decent homes. Some people even cried because their lifelong dream, which they themselves could not believe had now come true, had finally come true. Through this program, the close bond between the Party and the people will be strengthened and endure as the ‘Party’s will and the people’s hearts beat in unison, and the people will have even more faith and love in the leadership of the Party and the governing role of the State.”

Overwhelmed with emotion and happiness at being presented with his dream home, Mr. Dang Van Long (Binh Hoa hamlet, My Khanh commune) expressed his deep gratitude to the Party committees, local authorities, and benefactors who have shown concern, provided assistance, and donated the house. “Previously, my family lived in a dilapidated, leaky house, and life was extremely difficult. Thanks to the care and assistance of the Party committees, local authorities, and benefactors, my family now has a spacious and comfortable house. This is not only a place to shelter from the rain and sun, but also an invaluable gift, a heartwarming expression of human kindness, and a great encouragement that helps my family overcome difficulties and improve our lives,” Mr. Dang Van Long said emotionally.

Long Xuyen City's success in eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is a vivid testament to the solidarity and mutual support spirit of the people of An Giang. This is also a valuable lesson for other localities in the province to learn from and emulate, ensuring that "no one is left behind."

According to Long Xuyen City Party Secretary Huynh Quoc Thai, one of the highlights of the program is the active participation of charitable construction teams and groups; the Vietnam Fatherland Front at all levels and the 12 wards and communes. The selection process for households receiving support to replace temporary or dilapidated houses was conducted through community meetings to gather opinions. This ensured the correct beneficiaries were identified, guaranteeing democracy, openness, and transparency. The beneficiaries were also very aware of the program's purpose and significance, demonstrating a high level of responsibility and contributing to the local efforts to mobilize additional resources for the renovation and construction of more spacious and durable houses through support from relatives and family. Some households, whose family members were construction workers, even undertook the construction and repairs themselves, significantly reducing costs.
