Real Madrid have a brand new defense for the new season. |
In an effort to strengthen their defense, which is considered a weakness for the 2024/25 season, Real Madrid invested over €100 million in three defensive signings before the summer transfer window opened. The team's most important goal is to compete for the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins on June 14th.
Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen is the first signing, with a transfer fee of €58 million. Following that, left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica is also set to join the Bernabeu club for €50 million.
On May 30th, Real Madrid also announced the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract with Liverpool was about to expire. Although the England international could join the team on a free transfer in early July, Real Madrid still paid €10 million in compensation to ensure Alexander-Arnold could be with his new teammates on June 1st, preparing to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold offers Real Madrid a wide range of attacking options. |
After a season with almost no trophies (except for the European Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup), Real Madrid's management decided to spend heavily on overhauling the squad, with the ambition of conquering the FIFA Club World Cup. It's worth noting that this tournament also offers a huge prize money for the champion, amounting to 130 million euros.
The defense is considered Real Madrid's weak point for the 2024/25 season. Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao are out with long-term injuries, yet the club has chosen not to strengthen the squad during the winter transfer window. Instead, coach Carlo Ancelotti has to try to make do with the players he already has.
This led to disastrous results, with Real losing both the La Liga and Champions League titles. Recent injuries to Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, and Eduardo Camavinga made Real realize their mistake, forcing the club to make significant investments.
One of the beneficiaries of this defensive overhaul is Xabi Alonso, who will make his debut as Madrid's coach at the FIFA Club World Cup. The former star will have a young and fresh defense at his disposal, a stark contrast to the difficulties Carlo Ancelotti faced.
Real Madrid understands that the team cannot afford to sink into failure in the 2024/25 season. By completely overhauling the team, "Los Blancos" hope to return to the title race in all competitions next season.
