Messi's mother, Celia Cuccittini, was a huge fan of Lionel Richie – the famous singer known for hits like "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "Hello". Because she loved Richie's voice and style so much, she named her son after him, who would later become a world football legend.
Messi and Richie have shared the same name for over three decades but had never met. It wasn't until the evening of April 12th that the two finally met at an event. Richie couldn't hide his excitement, quickly sharing a series of photos on social media of them shaking hands and chatting happily.
Richie wrote emotionally: "When Lionel met Lionel. His mother named him after me and now we've met. It's wonderful to see him after all these years."
However, the online community remained skeptical. Many people didn't believe it was true, with comments such as: "Is it true that Messi was named after Lionel Richie?", "Where did this come from?", "Unbelievable!", "The Messi family truly recognized his greatness..."
This isn't the first time Richie has stated this. In a 2014 interview, he said, "They named him after me, and I'm so proud of that."
After Argentina's defeat to Chile in the 2016 Copa America final, Richie offered words of comfort: "Lionel, just take it easy like it's Sunday morning. Don't stress. I've lost at the Grammys so many times, but that makes me try harder. It's my name, I'm a winner, you can't go astray."
Richie's prediction proved accurate, as Leo later won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, as well as two consecutive Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.
