- Towards the sustainable development of the UNESCO Lang Son Global Geopark, in recent times, all levels and sectors in the province have implemented many comprehensive solutions ranging from environmental protection and ecosystem preservation to heritage conservation. This has contributed to maintaining green spaces throughout the entire geopark area.
The UNESCO Global Geopark Lang Son covers an area of over 4,840 km², preserving over 500 million years of geological history with 25 geological heritage sites, 4 natural heritage sites, and 23 cultural heritage sites, organized into 4 tour routes. The entire area has approximately 200 caves, along with numerous waterfalls, sinkholes, and unique ecosystems. It is also home to various ethnic communities with many distinctive cultural values.

Mr. Hoang Xuan Thuan, Director of the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion, said: To protect the environment and heritage, the unit has advised on the implementation of many comprehensive solutions in the geopark area. From 2022 to the present, the Geopark Management Board has intensified propaganda and raised awareness among the community and tourists through social media, websites, training courses, and workshops. The Center has organized approximately 60 workshops, forums, and heritage knowledge competitions; in 2025 alone, the online training program on geological heritage conservation attracted more than 3,000 youth union members at 205 locations.
In addition, environmental protection activities are regularly maintained, such as waste collection, landscape cleaning, and tree planting at heritage sites; and households involved in tourism are encouraged to use environmentally friendly products.
Within the Geopark area, communes and wards implement solutions in a specific and practical manner, focusing on raising awareness and mobilizing people to participate in preserving the landscape and protecting the environment at tourist sites.
In Tam Thanh ward, home to numerous historical sites such as Tam Thanh Pagoda, Mac Dynasty Citadel, and To Thi Mountain, where these sites are uniquely associated with natural caves, environmental protection is crucial not only for the exterior but also for the interior spaces of the caves.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Vu, Vice Chairman of the Ward People's Committee, the ward organizes monthly cleaning, planting, and tree care; this year alone, they planted 60 maple trees along the road leading to the Mac Dynasty Citadel, and also intensified propaganda through various information channels to encourage people to participate in preserving the heritage. As a result, awareness in the community has gradually improved.
Meanwhile, in Huu Lien commune, which includes four sites within the geopark: Son Loc Pagoda, the peaceful ancient ocean, Son Thuy Homestay, and Dong Lam Valley, environmental protection is linked to the development of community tourism.
Mr. Khong Hong Minh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Huu Lien commune, said: From 2025 to the present, the commune has organized two awareness campaigns for over 200 people, maintained regular cleaning at heritage sites, and promoted education to raise awareness among the people and the younger generation through extracurricular activities. Currently, the commune is developing a community tourism development plan associated with the restoration of Son Loc Pagoda, aiming to both preserve the heritage and create livelihoods for the people.
Solutions implemented from the provincial to the grassroots level have been gradually proving effective. Awareness among locals and tourists has been raised, many heritage sites have been renovated, landscapes are cleaner, and tourism activities are increasingly linked to "green" elements.
Currently, the Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion is advising and proposing to the Provincial People's Committee to issue regulations on environmental management and protection for geoparks, as a basis for unified management, clearly defining responsibilities among levels and sectors in environmental and heritage protection, contributing to preserving the landscape, protecting heritage values, aiming for sustainable tourism development and improving the lives of local people.
