Mr. Vang A Lenh - Head of Ta Ghenh village (Hong Thu commune) - is clearing a firebreak to protect the forest.
Mr. Vang A Lenh shared: "The lives of the highlanders in Hong Thu are closely tied to the forest. For generations, it has been this way; thanks to the forest, the villagers have enough water for daily life and production, and they have livelihoods from exploiting forest products and growing medicinal herbs. And now, they also have additional income from forest environmental service payments. Therefore, not only I but also the villagers understand that preserving the forest is protecting our livelihoods, and it requires the joint efforts of the entire community."
That is why, both before and after being elected village head by the people, A Lềnh has always been at the forefront of forest protection. At the same time, he has been enthusiastic and responsible in disseminating information and mobilizing villagers to strictly adhere to regulations on slash-and-burn farming and fire usage in the forest, especially prohibiting logging, burning forests for farming, or hunting wild animals.
It is known that when Mr. Lenh took on the role of village head (in 2020), the management, protection, and fire prevention and control of forests in the locality faced difficulties due to the low awareness and understanding of the villagers. “To preserve and expand the greenness of the forests, I carefully studied and actively disseminated the Forestry Law and relevant documents and directives from the province and commune regarding forest management, protection, and fire prevention and control to 180 households in the village. Along with that, I maintained the operation of the specialized forest protection team; coordinated with local forest rangers to patrol and monitor the forest during the peak of the dry season. I organized village meetings to discuss and incorporate into the village regulations provisions for penalties for violations of forest management and protection regulations,” Mr. Lenh said.
Mr. Lềnh's sense of responsibility and proactiveness earned him the respect of the villagers, who voluntarily complied with regulations in forest management and protection. This was demonstrated by the fact that families proactively prepared the necessary equipment for forest fire prevention and control; participated in creating firebreaks during the dry season; and reported any slash-and-burn farming to the village or local forest rangers. They also appointed members to the village's specialized forest protection team.
Mr. Lo Van Luan (a local forest ranger in Hong Thu commune) commented: "Village head Vang A Lenh is a prime example of dedication and responsibility to his work. He cooperates very well in coordinating and diversifying methods of propaganda, mobilization, and dissemination of regulations under the Forestry Law, as well as participating in patrols and guarding to protect the forest. As a result, the people in the village have raised their awareness and sense of responsibility, considering forest protection as a shared responsibility of the community and voluntarily implementing it."

Not stopping at the Ta Ghenh village, Mr. Lenh also mobilized the villagers to participate in protecting the protective forests in the border areas. For many years now, there have been no forest fires or violations of forestry laws in the village.
Mr. Vu A Thang (a resident of Ta Ghenh village) affirmed: “Thanks to Village Head Vang A Lenh's active propaganda, mobilization, and exemplary conduct, my family and I have a better understanding of the regulations on forest management and protection and are seriously implementing them. Now, the villagers are working together to protect the forest so that it continues to provide a sustainable livelihood.”
The Ta Ghenh village currently has 942.78 hectares of forest for which it receives payments for forest environmental services. The most recent payment received was over 522 million VND. This serves as encouragement for households, showing them that "money comes from the forest" and that preserving the forest is a duty and responsibility shared by everyone.
The positive contributions of Village Head Vàng A Lềnh have been recognized with numerous commendations from Hồng Thu Commune and Sìn Hồ Forest Management Unit. But for him, the greatest reward is that the headwater forests of Tà Ghênh remain lush and green, the water continues to flow to the fields, and the villagers always consider the forest as their source of life and work together to protect it.
