Former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to join Microsoft

Former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will join Microsoft to lead a new AI research team, according to CEO Satya Nadella.

On the social network X, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that the former CEO and former President of OpenAI and other colleagues will join Microsoft. The software giant has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI as well as has a close partnership with the startup that developed ChatGPT.

“We will quickly provide them with the resources they need to succeed,” Mr. Nadella wrote. In addition, Microsoft will remain committed to working with OpenAI and continue to support customers and partners.

Altman began leading OpenAI in 2019. Late on November 17, the OpenAI board of directors announced that Altman was fired and replaced by Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati. The reason given was that he was not straightforward when communicating with the board of directors.

However, this decision has faced a backlash from employees and investors. Many parties have put pressure on OpenAI to reinstate Sam Altman. On the night of November 19, OpenAI said it would bring in former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear to run the company. A few hours later, Mr. Nadella announced that Altman and Brockman would join Microsoft.
