During our reporting trip to Bac Son commune, we visited the dried pho noodle production facility of veteran Pham Ba Anh in Vinh Thuan village – a typical economic model of the locality. Having been involved in the traditional dried pho noodle making craft since the 1990s, Mr. Anh's family previously mainly made noodles manually on a small scale. Mr. Anh shared: "To increase productivity, since the beginning of 2025, I have invested in a machine-based production line, increasing capacity to about 250 kg of rice per day, producing over 320 kg of finished dried pho noodles, with stable sales within and outside the commune, and expanding to markets outside the province. Before that, in 2023, my family developed the Khinh Sa sausage product, which achieved OCOP 3-star certification."
Through promoting the emulation movement for economic development, the material and spiritual lives of war veteran association members in Bac Son commune have been significantly improved. To date, the percentage of war veteran households with relatively good or wealthy economic conditions has reached nearly 70%; the number of poor and near-poor households is only 10, accounting for nearly 1%; and 24 out of 30 branches no longer have poor member households. |
By maintaining traditional crafts while innovating production methods, Mr. Ánh's family business model generates an income of over 250 million VND per year after deducting expenses.
Not only Mr. Anh's family, but in recent times, many war veterans in Bac Son commune have actively participated in labor and production emulation. With a spirit of self-reliance, daring to think and act, the members have proactively transformed the production structure, diversified occupations, boldly applied science and technology, and gradually increased their income and stabilized their lives.
Mr. Duong Cong Long, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Bac Son commune and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Bac Son commune, emphasized: From July 1, 2025, Bac Son commune was newly established based on the merger of Bac Son town, Long Dong commune, and the former Bac Quynh commune. After the merger, the Veterans Association of the commune has more than 1,030 members operating in 30 branches. Upholding the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers, the commune's veterans always promote self-reliance and self-improvement, actively competing to develop family economies and contributing to building their homeland after the merger. Through effective economic models, members not only improve their lives but also create jobs, spreading the spirit of overcoming difficulties and responsibility to the community.
Based on that orientation, the movement "Veterans helping each other reduce poverty and excel in economic activities" continues to be promoted, making practical contributions to the successful implementation of political , economic, and social tasks, maintaining stability and sustainable development at the grassroots level. The association currently has 8 effective economic models run by veterans, with incomes ranging from 100 to 400 million VND per year per model. In addition, taking advantage of local resources, 11 veteran members have participated in developing community tourism models, attracting nearly 4,000 visitors annually and generating estimated revenue of over 1.5 billion VND.
To facilitate economic development for its members, the Veterans Association of the commune has effectively played a bridging role in mobilizing, managing, and utilizing resources. Currently, the association manages 11 savings and loan groups, closely coordinating with the Social Policy Bank to effectively implement preferential loan programs, with a total outstanding loan balance of 31 billion VND to date. Through this credit channel, 112 veteran members have received loans ranging from 50 to 100 million VND each to invest in production, purchase plant seeds, and restock livestock.
In parallel, the various levels of the association flexibly utilize the "Comradeship Fund" to provide interest-free loans to members; creating conditions for members to participate in training courses, learn from experience, and transfer scientific and technical knowledge.
Through promoting the emulation movement for economic development, the material and spiritual lives of the Veterans Association members in Bac Son commune have been significantly improved. To date, the percentage of veteran households with relatively good or wealthy economic conditions has reached nearly 70%; the number of poor and near-poor households is only 10, accounting for nearly 1%; and 24 out of 30 branches no longer have poor member households. Recognizing these efforts and positive contributions, in December 2025, the Veterans Association of Bac Son commune was honored to receive a commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for outstanding achievements in the implementation of association work during the 2022-2025 period.
