The Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City has just saved the life of LTKH, a 17-year-old female student residing in Ho Chi Minh City, who suffered multiple severe injuries following a traffic accident.
According to the medical history, at the time of the accident, the patient was riding on the back of a motorbike driven by her mother, with her 5-year-old brother sitting in the middle. After colliding with a container truck traveling in the same direction from behind, all three fell onto the road. The girl was run over by the truck's wheel in the right thigh area and was immediately taken to the emergency room.
Upon admission, the patient was in severe hemorrhagic shock, with unmeasurable pulse and blood pressure. Doctors noted multiple serious injuries, including a fractured right femur, pelvic fracture, lumbar spine injury, chest and abdominal trauma, and complex crushing injuries to the perineal area.
Immediately, an inter-hospital red alert protocol was activated with the coordination of multiple specialties. The patient was intubated, received intensive care, emergency blood transfusions, and underwent several major surgeries.
During the surgery, the team discovered a ruptured left renal vein causing severe bleeding in the retroperitoneal space. To save the patient's life, the doctors were forced to remove the left kidney to control the bleeding, while also addressing pelvic injuries, creating a temporary colostomy, draining the pleural cavity, and treating complex crush injuries.
Due to significant blood loss, the patient received over 5 liters of packed red blood cells along with various other blood products. After 24 hours of intensive care, hemodynamics gradually stabilized, and no further blood transfusions were needed.
What moved the medical team was that when she regained consciousness, the girl still remembered and immediately asked about the condition of her younger brother who was with her. In the accident, the 5-year-old boy suffered injuries to his left foot and is continuing to receive treatment.
According to the doctors, this is one of the cases of severe multiple trauma that was saved thanks to the timely activation of the inter-hospital red alert procedure and close coordination between multiple specialties.
