'Exclusive' map access for European iPhones
This means users can easily use Google Maps or Waze to find directions, right on their iPhone. Apple's decision stems from compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), aiming to create fair competition and empower users with choice.
However, this privilege is exclusive to users in the EU, leaving iFans in other regions feeling envious.
Although iPhone users worldwide can't choose their own map app, they can still find some consolation in the feature of selecting a default translation app. This allows you to replace Apple's Translate app with Google Translate or other translation apps of your choice.
The iOS 18.4 update is currently in beta testing and is expected to be officially released in early April.
Apple's decision to allow users to choose their default map app in the EU is a major step forward, raising hopes for a similar change globally. Will Apple extend this privilege to all iPhone users in the future?
