From 5 hectares of land used for two rice crops per year, Mr. Nguyen Van Lop, residing in Hamlet T4, has been able to create a vast passion fruit plantation with 11,700 vines as it is today. To increase his income, Mr. Lop boldly changed his production mindset, improving each plot of land and bringing high -economic- value passion fruit varieties to take root in what were once rice fields.
Now, after months of perseverance, the rice fields that were once barren have been covered with passion fruit vines, initially bringing in a significant income. Mr. Lợp shared: “I always believed that if you dare to think differently, dare to innovate, and persevere in farming, even inefficient rice-growing areas will eventually bear fruit from new crops, including passion fruit.”
After 5 months of cultivation, passion fruit is ready for harvest, with a wholesale price of approximately 33,000 VND/kg. Since the start of harvesting, the estimated yield has reached 50 tons, and harvesting will continue for 18 months. Mr. Lợp plans to invest in a pulley system for transporting the passion fruit in the near future.
The wind of innovative thinking is also spreading strongly in integrated economic models. Mr. Nguyen Tan Luc, residing in Hamlet T4, owns 20 hectares of land planted with various fruit trees such as coconut, pineapple, and durian, including 5 hectares of durian with 1,100 trees. The durian trees were planted in 2022 and are currently in the development stage.
Mr. Luc shared that nearly seven years ago, when he started switching to durian cultivation, he was quite apprehensive because the land was highly acidic, requiring significant improvement costs, while durian trees take 5-7 years to bear fruit. However, with a spirit of learning, he decided to develop the model. He hired workers to improve the soil, installed an irrigation system, and gradually transformed the acidic land into the lush durian orchard it is today. Due to being planted on acidic soil, the trees grow quite slowly. Mr. Luc said that he expects to start harvesting fruit from about 500 trees in 2027.
By effectively utilizing its potential and strengths in soil and irrigation systems, Vinh Dieu commune has gradually diversified its crops. In the first six months of 2026, the area planted with vegetables and fruit trees in the locality reached 336 hectares, achieving 79.2% of the plan. To date, local farmers have harvested 92 hectares of various vegetables, yielding 2,099 tons, reaching 27.8% of the plan, including 237 hectares of watermelon, 61 hectares of cassava, 5 hectares of passion fruit, 3 hectares of chili peppers, 3 hectares of corn, and 9 hectares of lotus...
Mr. Ha Quang Minh, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Dieu commune, said: "In implementing the breakthrough in sustainable agricultural development set forth by the First Party Congress of the commune, term 2025-2030, in the coming time, the locality will flexibly use capital from programs and projects to support people with seeds and techniques; and direct organizations to act as intermediaries with banks to provide people with low-interest loans to invest in new crops."
The goal for the period 2026-2030 is for Vinh Dieu commune to form large-scale concentrated commodity production areas, develop crop rotation on rice land according to the 2 rice - 1 cash crop model, and focus on expanding the area for planting high-economic-value fruit trees such as coconut, durian, jackfruit, etc.
Mr. Ha Quang Minh stated: “We are actively seeking partners to consume our products, piloting a production model linked to processing, and developing OCOP products to promote sustainable economic development and increase people's income. The commune continues to promote technology transfer, enhance added value, and develop collective and farm-based economies.”
From vast rice paddies to thriving orchards, the commune of Vinh Dieu, a border region, offers hope for a prosperous life and affirms its transformation. The shift in crop structure has yielded economic benefits, helping farmers gradually change their production mindset, develop sustainable agriculture, and effectively reduce poverty.
