DIVERSE PUBLIC CULTURAL SPACES

According to the Department of Culture, Science and Information of Da Lat City, there are currently 21 parks serving the recreational needs of the people; along with 9 multi-purpose sports arenas, various forms of grassroots sports and physical activities are gradually being established and operating effectively; 2 golf courses attract domestic and foreign tourists for sightseeing, recreation, and relaxation; 7 heated swimming pools serve the needs of people for exercise and health improvement; and 41 artificial turf fields attract a large number of people in the area to participate in training. The city has also installed 6 sets of exercise equipment in parks throughout the city to serve the needs of people for exercise and health improvement.

In addition, within the city, Xuan Huong Lake, recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a scenic landmark, has created a highlight for the open space, serving as a place for recreation, entertainment, and sports for locals and tourists visiting Da Lat. Particularly, Lam Vien Square is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the city, with its architecture featuring wild sunflowers and artichokes. It is considered an impressive work of art, a distinctive symbol of Da Lat, and also a central location for many important political events of the city and Lam Dong province.

Furthermore, Da Lat also boasts a cultural space dedicated to the gong music of ethnic minorities, a place for people of different ethnic groups to interact, exchange experiences, and strengthen solidarity within their communities. This practical activity contributes to the preservation, promotion, and honoring of the Gong Culture Space, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Currently, there are three active gong culture spaces in the city, located in tourist areas such as the Valley of Love tourist area and the Bon To Num tourist site in Ta Nung commune. These locations also attract tourists for sightseeing and cultural exchange.

DEVELOPING MODERN SPACES RICH IN IDENTITY

Over the years, Da Lat City has paid more attention to public cultural spaces serving the daily life, recreation, and entertainment of residents and tourists. The types of urban public cultural spaces have become more diverse, combining various forms of exploitation and use such as pedestrian streets, playgrounds, shopping areas, and green parks. However, the role of urban public cultural spaces has not yet fully met the cultural needs of the people in social life.

According to the Department of Culture, Science and Information of Da Lat City, to develop public cultural spaces and contribute to improving the quality of life and spiritual culture of the people, it is necessary to transform suitable streets into public cultural spaces, creating attractive pedestrian routes decorated with local, environmentally friendly materials. Along with that, parks should be equipped with seating, shade, and necessary services for local people and tourists. Various art forms should be integrated into public cultural spaces, such as street art, which is developing positively thanks to the appeal of festivals, music festivals, fairs, night markets, installation art, and street art.

Da Lat is entering a new phase of development with a rapid increase in urban population and high population density. Therefore, the planning and organization of public cultural spaces is becoming increasingly important, aiming to both create a pleasant environment and foster cultural and creative spaces for the community to enjoy. Consequently, the planning and organization of public cultural spaces must be linked to the local arts, handicrafts, and unique traditional cultural festivals. In particular, attention should be paid to planning and establishing book streets and book avenues within public cultural spaces to encourage reading culture and promote lifelong learning among all segments of the population.

However, for public cultural spaces to truly benefit and value the people, it is crucial that citizens raise their awareness of protecting their own living environment, thereby changing their lifestyles and habits. In particular, innovative and effective models should be promoted and replicated. To maximize the effectiveness of public cultural spaces, the participation of the entire community is needed, along with collaboration between urban managers and businesses to create more public cultural spaces for people to rest, relax, and exercise. Simultaneously, management efforts must be strengthened to prevent encroachment and degradation, and a unified and strict system of penalties must be established to ensure the sustainable development of public cultural spaces in line with the overall development of the city.
