A newly constructed fountain in Vienna, Austria, costing $2 million, has been deemed "the ugliest in the world " by many because its design is not as aesthetically pleasing as expected.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the modern water supply system, which brought Vienna fresh water from springs in the Alps, the Austrian capital's authorities launched a competition to design a fountain. A design by a group of local artists was selected by the authorities and built according to the original concept.

Inaugurated on October 24th in the presence of Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Vienna's newest fountain, the WirWasser, quickly attracted public attention. Many called it "the ugliest fountain in Europe," "the ugliest in the world," or "the ugliest ever seen," especially given its construction cost of $2 million. "The fountain damages Vienna's beautiful image in the eyes of tourists," one commenter remarked.
"The structure looks like it was built by a 5-year-old," "Many others could create something more beautiful for a cheaper price," "Where is Vienna with its beautiful heritage?" were some of the other critical comments.

Despite the criticism, Mayor Michael Ludwig insisted the fountain had an extraordinary design, inspired by reality and creating a sense of connection. Facing criticism for wasting $2 million on "the ugliest fountain in the world," the city stated they had managed to save $300,000.
Besides the new fountain, visitors to the Austrian capital can participate in other experiences suggested by Tripadvisor, such as attending a classical concert at St. Peter's Basilica, taking a day trip to the famous village of Hallstatt, a tour of Vienna, and visiting Schönbrunn Castle (Beautiful Stream), which has 1,441 rooms.
