Autumn beauty of the lakeside village

Located in the state of Upper Austria, nestled between the majestic Hoher Dachstein Mountains and the clear blue Hallstätter Lake, the town of Hallstatt is a picturesque destination. With an area of nearly 60 km², it is famous for its ancient architecture and poetic natural scenery. In September 2025, the British travel magazine Time Out honored Hallstatt in the list of the 10 most beautiful towns in the world , further affirming the village's appeal to global tourists.

Through the lens of architect and photographer Dang Duc Vinh, the beauty of Hallstatt in mid-October appears full of romance. Different from the typical blue and white of Oia (Greece) or the earthy brown tones of Gordes (France), Hallstatt is covered in warm orange-yellow tones of wooden houses, standing out against the green trees gradually changing color in autumn.

The golden time to explore Hallstatt

According to Dang Duc Vinh, the best time to visit and take photos in Hallstatt is before 9am. This is when the town is still quiet and has not been affected by tourist groups. The gentle morning sunlight is also a decisive factor in creating photos with the most depth and true colors.

The ancient wooden houses are located close together on the hillside overlooking the lake.

Note on schedule

  • Before 9am : Perfect time to take photos. If you are driving, this is also the easiest time to find a parking space.
  • After 10am : Public transport such as buses and boats start bringing in large numbers of tourists, making the town crowded.
  • After 12 noon : You should not go to Hallstatt at this time because it is too crowded, the light is no longer beautiful and it is difficult to fully enjoy the space.

A half-day trip is enough to explore the main features of the town, but if you want to take beautiful photos and experience the tranquility, you should consider staying overnight.

Unmissable photo angles

Hallstatt is considered one of the most photographed villages in Europe. Its location on the mountainside creates multi-layered views, from the lake, the houses to the distant mountain peaks.

Hallstatt Parish Church with its Gothic tower is the town's landmark.

Featured photo locations

  • Hallstatt Parish Church : The Gothic structure in the center is an indispensable symbol in every frame.
  • Boat dock and swan beach : This place offers a romantic scene with small boats and graceful swans on the lake.
  • Stairs at the end of town : A unique angle, giving a sense of antiquity and peace.

Another interesting detail that adds to the autumn colours in Hallstatt is the Chinese Lantern Plant. This plant is often planted in front of fences, blooming in autumn with a brilliant orange colour, becoming a beautiful decorative highlight for houses and photos.
