Make the most of your luxury stay
Based on five years of experience at luxury hotels around the world , Joey Hadden, a travel reporter for Business Insider, has pointed out common mistakes that travelers often make, which devalue the experience and cause unnecessary waste.
1. Skip the luxury hotel toiletries
There’s no need to bring toiletries from home when staying at a five-star hotel. Instead, guests should enjoy the high-quality products provided. Joey Hadden says she often sees luxury brands like Le Labo, Byredo, and Floris in the bathrooms. This is an opportunity to experience expensive care products without spending a fortune.

2. Using expensive laundry services
Laundry service at five-star hotels is convenient and luxurious, but it can be very expensive. On a trip to the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Joey paid $115 for 14 items of clothing. She considers this her most expensive mistake, as it would have been enough to buy a new outfit. For travelers on a budget, this is an unnecessary expense.
3. Only order room service food
Only dining through room service makes guests miss out on the unique culinary space. Restaurants in 5-star hotels often invest carefully in architecture and have different menus, some are even listed in the Michelin Guide. Joey Hadden recommends that guests go directly to the restaurant to fully feel the atmosphere and culinary experience that the hotel brings.

4. Don't wear swimsuits even in winter
Many travelers skip packing swimsuits for fall and winter trips, but that’s a mistake. Most five-star hotels have heated indoor pools or heated outdoor pools that are open year-round. Joey regretted missing out on the beautiful pool in Salt Lake City or the heated outdoor pool at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole because he didn’t pack the right gear.
5. Decline turndown service
This is a luxury hotel service that many people are unfamiliar with. In the early evening, staff will tidy up the room, make the bed, adjust the curtains and lights. Sometimes, this service comes with special offers. At the Bulgari Hotel & Spa in Milan, Joey discovered a pillow menu with complimentary scent options like lavender and aloe vera, which helped elevate the experience.
6. Book one night only
One night is not enough to enjoy all the amenities that a 5-star hotel has to offer. With check-in times typically starting at 4 p.m. and check-out times starting at 11 a.m., guests won’t have enough time to visit the gym, spa, pool, or fitness classes. Joey Hadden advises that if you decide to invest in a luxury stay, book at least two nights to ensure a complete and relaxing experience.
