The electricity industry has made efforts to focus on electricity production and supply to ensure stable development. In the first 6 months of 2025, electricity production reached 4,645 million kWh, up 10.6% over the same period in 2024; commercial electricity was about 460 million kWh, up 8.2% over the same period in 2024 and accounting for about 9.9% of electricity production.
In the face of the widespread severe heat wave that has occurred in the North and Central regions in recent days, causing high demand for electricity, the solution to ensure electricity supply according to the telegram of the Prime Minister , the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee directed departments, branches, sectors, organizations, localities and units to synchronously implement solutions on saving electricity in agencies and units; at the same time, propagate to people to raise awareness of using electricity economically during peak months when the weather is hot.
Districts, towns and cities closely coordinate with Son La Electricity Company and investors in implementing power grid projects, doing a good job of propaganda and mobilizing people to hand over land for construction of power grid projects in the management area. Propagating and mobilizing organizations and individuals to invest in developing rooftop solar power systems associated with on-site self-consumption; encouraging administrative and career establishments, production and business establishments to develop rooftop solar power for self-production and self-consumption in order to effectively exploit potential, reduce investment pressure on the power transmission system and reduce the load on the national grid .
Mr. Doan Van Chau, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said: The Department supervises the implementation of electricity supply of Son La Power Company according to the list of important electricity users who are prioritized for electricity supply; inspects and supervises hydropower plant investors to comply with approved regulations to ensure electricity supply. Directs and urges hydropower reservoir owners to review and develop plans for operation and electricity production in the context of water shortages at hydropower reservoirs, ensuring appropriate water balance, prioritizing water from hydropower reservoirs for daily life, agricultural production, and drought and water shortage prevention.
Son La Power Company has developed a plan for power supply in the province based on the power grid system, load forecast and list of priority customers. Continue to invest in construction and technical management, complete many key projects, such as: New 110 kV transformer stations and capacity upgrade projects. Son La Power Company continues to propagate and mobilize customers to implement the Prime Minister's and the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee's Directive on electricity saving, with the goal of administrative units saving 10% of electricity consumption; public lighting saving 30%; industrial production and service business saving 2%...
Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director, informed: The company works with small hydropower plants to increase the shift of generation hours during peak hot hours. Urge units to closely coordinate with agencies, localities and large production and consumption customers to strictly implement electricity saving solutions; work with large customers to register capacity, shift loads during periods of high load or adverse conditions. Focus on ensuring safe and stable power supply for socio-economic development and political security in the area under the management of the unit; absolutely do not neglect operations leading to incidents and instability of power supply. Speed up the standardization of low-voltage grid diagrams on software platforms for management, the deadline is before June 30, 2025.
The province currently has 60 hydropower plants with a capacity of 3,794 MW, and rooftop solar power of 60 MWp, reaching 63.2% of the power development plan by 2030. Every year, the province's electricity production output is 12-15 billion kWh, accounting for 5-6% of the total electricity production nationwide. In 2025, it is expected to put 2 hydropower plants with a capacity of 46 MW into operation. The Provincial People's Committee requires hydropower plants to strengthen the monitoring and close supervision of the plant's equipment operation status, proactively conduct periodic inspections, promptly detect and thoroughly overcome shortcomings, ensure adequate spare materials to improve reliability, enhance operational efficiency and power generation capacity of generators, and absolutely ensure that no incidents occur due to subjective causes. Hydropower plants need to proactively update and closely assess the actual hydrological situation; Strengthen close coordination and regular information exchange with local authorities and relevant State management agencies to operate reservoirs flexibly and effectively, ensuring a harmonious balance between water needs for daily life, agricultural production and electricity production, especially during the peak dry season and heat waves. For solar power systems, enhance the ability to exploit storage and accumulate electricity to improve efficiency and power supply capacity.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Deputy General Director of Nam Chien Hydropower Joint Stock Company, said: Nam Chien Hydropower Plant has a total capacity of 200 MW, with a designed electricity output of 813 million kWh/year. As of June 24, the electricity output reached over 236.689 million kWh, equal to 149.78% compared to the same period in 2024. The Company has increased its grasp of weather forecast information to proactively and effectively exploit water resources in the lake, improve electricity production efficiency; proactively develop plans to prevent and combat floods and storms; and carry out maintenance and repair of generators to ensure safety and efficiency.
With the province's strong direction and the proactiveness of the electricity sector in electricity production and distribution, and the joint efforts of the entire population to save electricity, it will contribute significantly to ensuring a stable and continuous supply of electricity, effectively serving the economic growth target of 8% or more.
