Obese men are more prone to erectile dysfunction.

VnExpressVnExpress03/09/2023

Obese men are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation than men of the same age with a healthy weight.

Dr. Tra Anh Duy, MD, PhD, from the Men's Health Center, stated that obesity causes many health problems, affecting both physiological function and penis size.

High blood lipid levels increase the risk of atherosclerosis.

Obesity disrupts blood lipid levels, increasing total cholesterol in the blood and causing atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic plaques adhere to the walls of blood vessels, narrowing the lumen. Furthermore, when these plaques break off and penetrate deeper into smaller blood vessels, they can cause blockages. These factors hinder blood flow to the penis, directly affecting erectile function and causing erectile dysfunction in men.

Cardiovascular diseases and the effects of cardiovascular medications.

According to a study on older men, the incidence of erectile dysfunction is 39% in patients with treated cardiovascular disease and 15% in men taking antihypertensive medication. Heart medications also contribute to impaired erectile function. Treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients using diuretics or antihypertensive drugs also requires more caution compared to men without cardiovascular problems.

Cardiovascular diseases are both a cause of erectile dysfunction and a complicating factor in its treatment. Obesity has been shown in numerous studies to be linked to chronic cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, and chronic coronary artery disease. Through these chronic diseases, obesity indirectly impacts male sexual function. Scientists have demonstrated that weight loss in patients with cardiovascular problems improves the severity of cardiovascular disease, thereby improving erectile function.

Accompanying blood glucose disorders

Obesity and diabetes are two metabolic problems that often go hand in hand. Obese men are at a higher risk of developing diabetes than men with a healthy weight. In men with diabetes, obesity also makes it difficult to control blood sugar, leading to the appearance of vascular and nerve complications of diabetes, which in turn affects erectile function.

In men with erectile dysfunction, often accompanied by blood sugar disorders, stabilizing blood sugar levels contributes to improved erectile function. Weight loss is one of the effective methods for controlling blood sugar, thereby improving male sexual function.

The penis looks more modest.

Many obese men often feel that their penis has become smaller than before. However, numerous studies confirm that obesity does not shorten the organ. When men are obese, fat deposits often accumulate in the abdominal and pubic areas. It is these layers of fat that partially obscure the penis when flaccid, creating the illusion of a shorter penis.

Thus, it can be seen that obesity makes the penis appear "artificially" shorter, thereby affecting the psychology of men, leading to anxiety and low self-esteem during intercourse. This psychological factor strongly impacts erectile function.

Doctor Duy advises men to control their weight by exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet, which contributes to improved sexual function. Weight loss also contributes to improved overall health, ensuring physical fitness and stamina during intimacy.
