Austria's far-right party wins historic victory.

The FPOe won 28.8% of the vote, defeating the ruling People's Party (OeVP) (which came in second with 26.3% of the vote), according to the near-final results.

However, all other parties have so far refused to form a coalition with FPOe leader Herbert Kickl (56). "Today we have written a part of history together. We have opened the door to a new era," Kickl told supporters in Vienna.

Like far-right parties elsewhere in Europe, the FPOe has seen its popularity soar, fueled by voters' discontent over migration, inflation, and Covid-19 restrictions.
