On July 2, 1976, at its first session, the Sixth National Assembly decided to name our country the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; choosing Hanoi as the capital and renaming Saigon - Gia Dinh as Ho Chi Minh City. Before this important historical milestone, ushering in a new era for the country's development, composer Nguyen Van Thuong was overwhelmed with emotion. He remembered President Ho Chi Minh's contributions, and the lyrics and melody gradually took shape: “Fragrant flowers from all over the countryside are brought here to offer to Him / From here, North and South rejoice together in the new spring / Independence and freedom shine brightly, His contributions are like mountains / We stand shoulder to shoulder, dedicating our lives / For the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - our heroic country!”
Like most of Nguyen Van Thuong's works, this song is a harmonious blend of traditional folk melodies and modern musical techniques. Many of his works are exemplary and are included in the curriculum of music schools. The song has been chosen as the theme for many art programs commemorating President Ho Chi Minh's birthday and celebrating major national holidays.
Composer and Professor Nguyen Van Thuong (1919 - 2002), from Thua Thien Hue province, was one of the first generation of composers in modern Vietnamese music. He is famous for his works such as "Winter Night," "Binh Tri Thien in the Flames of War," "My Homeland Has Never Been So Beautiful" (poem by To Huu), "Song on the Mountain" (from the film "A Phu's Wife and Husband"), and many valuable instrumental and dance music works. After relocating to North Vietnam, he studied at the Beijing Conservatory of Music (China) and the Leipzig Conservatory of Music (East Germany), headed the Central Song and Dance Ensemble, and was the Director of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. He also wrote textbooks, taught music, and many of his instrumental works have been performed both domestically and internationally.
For his outstanding contributions to revolutionary music, Nguyen Van Thuong was awarded the Third-Class Independence Medal, the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts in 2000, and many other prestigious awards.
