Apple recently held its annual WWDC conference, where it announced all the new software for its devices in the coming year. Most notably, iOS 26 for iPhones was released. Those who own an iPhone 11 or later will receive the update for free starting later this year.

One puzzling aspect is that the successor to iOS 18 is currently named iOS 26 instead of iOS 19, as is customary.

According to 9to5mac , operating system version numbers are purely a marketing tactic, not a scientific one. Apple can name them however they want. Therefore, the company takes advantage of this opportunity to adjust iPhone operating system version numbers to correspond with the calendar year.

The lifecycle of the new operating system will primarily extend to 2026. iOS 26 is in beta testing for developers this summer and will only officially launch widely in September 2025.

After that, iOS 26 will be the primary version on iPhones until September 2026, when iOS 27 will be ready to replace it. Thus, for approximately 9 out of 12 months, iOS 26 will serve as the main platform on iPhones, falling within 2026.

That's why Apple decided to number iOS using the digits of the following year. To maintain consistency, the company also switched all other platforms to the new naming convention, including iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26.

The crucial question is whether Apple will rename the iPhone models in a similar way. Currently, we're on the iPhone 16 line, and the iPhone 17 series is set to launch this fall. Apple might call it the iPhone 26 instead of the iPhone 17.

9to5mac suggests this seems less likely given the immense influence of the iPhone brand. Harmony with the software version wouldn't be enough to convince Apple to change the iPhone naming convention.

Furthermore, Apple prefers to sell iPhones for many years. The operating system version is updated annually and is free, but customers can still purchase an "iPhone 2026" as a new product in 2028.

For example, even though the latest iPhone on the market is the iPhone 16, released in 2024, Apple still sells the iPhone 15 through its website. Even retailers stock up on new inventory of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13, devices that were introduced 3-4 years ago.
