Can Gio currently possesses many unique cultural values associated with its forest-sea ecosystem, revolutionary history, the life of coastal residents, folk beliefs, traditional festivals, and ancient fishing villages. Notable among these are the Nghinh Ong Festival – a national intangible cultural heritage recognized in 2013; and the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 2000, covering an area of over 75,700 hectares, creating a distinctive cultural and ecological space for Ho Chi Minh City. Associated with the mangrove forest is the National Historical Monument of the Rung Sac Base – an important base for special forces during the resistance war against the US. These distinctive cultural and historical characteristics have created many advantages and potentials for Can Gio to develop various forms of tourism, including ecotourism, resort tourism, health and wellness tourism, community tourism, waterway tourism, marine sports, and coastal night-time economy .
Choosing Can Gio as a regular family vacation destination, Ms. Huynh Hoa (An Dong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) shared: “Every time I come to Can Gio, I feel very comfortable because of the peaceful atmosphere and the friendly, hospitable people. My family visits fishing villages, listens to locals tell stories about their work at sea, participates in folk religious rituals, and enjoys local dishes. These experiences help me understand more about the life, customs, and culture of the people of Can Gio, something that is hard to find anywhere else.”
Mr. Nguyen Huu An, Deputy Head of the Planning and Tourism Resource Development Department (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism), said that the Can Gio area is being oriented towards shifting from simply exploiting natural resources to enhancing experiential value, developing high-quality tourism products with unique characteristics, and aligning with sustainable development goals. Furthermore, Can Gio is expected to contribute to completing the tourism structure towards a "One destination - multiple ecosystem experiences," where tourists can simultaneously experience urban tourism, culture, cuisine , MICE, ecology, relaxation, and marine activities in a single trip.
The night-time economy, reflecting the unique cultural identity of the coastal region, is one of the new directions for the combined economic and tourism development of the Can Gio area. Priority is given to activities linked to the natural landscape, local culture, and the lives of fishermen, such as seafood night markets, community art programs, traditional festivals, coastal cultural experiences, and night-time waterway tours. Furthermore, with the operation of large-scale service, commercial, entertainment, and accommodation projects, Can Gio will have more opportunities to develop modern night-time economic zones, creating incentives to attract tourists to stay longer and use more services. However, service activities need to be appropriately planned, controlling noise, light, and environmental impacts to ensure they do not affect the World Biosphere Reserve and the unique mangrove forest ecosystem of the area.
Strategic infrastructure projects such as the Can Gio Bridge replacing the Binh Khanh ferry, the Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line, the expanded Rung Sac road, and the southern coastal road connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta provinces are creating strong momentum for the development of the Can Gio area. Upon completion, these projects will be an important foundation for Can Gio to build and develop distinctive cultural products, contributing to enriching the city's unique character and increasing its attractiveness and diversity of cultural and tourism offerings.
