After many years living and working in the former Khanh Hoa province, in 2025, Mr. Truong Van Duc from Phu Hoi village, Nam Cua Viet commune, returned to his hometown and planned to establish a long-term business raising red-tailed catfish and crucian carp on an area of more than 4,000 square meters of white sand.
According to Mr. Duc, he boldly chose red-tailed catfish and crucian carp to experiment with farming in the sandy area of Nam Cua Viet commune. From around August 2025, he released 13,000 crucian carp and 7,000 red-tailed catfish fingerlings. Red-tailed catfish are easy to raise and have the highest economic value among catfish species on the market. Furthermore, red-tailed catfish can be raised in cages with other fish species such as crucian carp, common carp, and grass carp…
Mr. Duc selected and purchased the catfish fingerlings from a reputable source; the fish are healthy, uniform in size, and weigh an average of 10g each. It is expected that after 10 months of rearing, the catfish will reach a weight of over 1kg each. Furthermore, red-tailed catfish have high nutritional value, and their meat is softer and more flavorful when cooked, making them easier to sell and more expensive than other catfish varieties. Currently, the price of red-tailed catfish sold at the pond is around 100,000 VND/kg.

Crucian carp, in particular, is a hardy fish, easy to raise, requires low investment and little effort, and its meat is delicious and used as a medicinal remedy and to nourish the body. Crucian carp are omnivorous, so they can be fed rice bran, commercial pellet feed, or agricultural by-products.
After 4-5 months of rearing, the fish reach marketable size of 100-200g/fish, with the current selling price around 150,000 VND/kg. From the beginning of 2026 until now, Mr. Duc has started harvesting the crucian carp to sell to traders and has earned over 50 million VND. It is expected that the red-tailed catfish and crucian carp farming model will bring in an income of over 200 million VND/year.
In recent years, Nam Cua Viet commune has focused on developing aquaculture in an intensive, large-scale manner, applying high technology and new technologies, organic and ecological farming models, and adopting Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP) certification standards to enhance value and ensure sustainable development. The commune has also strengthened the management of farming areas, especially shrimp farming on sandy soil, ensuring environmental protection and disease safety; focusing on reviewing farming area planning, with an emphasis on stabilizing the existing aquaculture area.
In addition, the commune focuses on diversifying aquaculture species; continues to develop the 2-3 stage shrimp farming model in a sustainable direction; encourages the construction of settling ponds for high-tide ponds, ensuring sufficient conditions for sustainable intensive farming; and concentrates investment on developing key aquaculture species, ensuring biosafety, and protecting the environment in aquaculture management.
To date, the total aquaculture area in Nam Cua Viet commune has reached 385 hectares. This includes 22 hectares for raising abalone, 201 hectares for raising whiteleg shrimp, and 35 hectares for mixed farming... The total aquaculture production in the first six months of 2026 reached 570 tons.
According to Le Duc Anh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Cua Viet commune, in recent years, the commune's Party committee and government have implemented many solutions to promote the development of the fisheries sector, especially focusing on sustainable exploitation and aquaculture; developing diverse species and forms of aquaculture in saltwater, brackish, and freshwater areas such as whiteleg shrimp, tiger shrimp, abalone, kingfish, catfish, and crucian carp, which have high economic value.
In the coming period, Nam Cua Viet commune will focus on developing aquaculture in a high-tech direction while protecting the environment; applying scientific and technical advancements to improve productivity, quality, and value of aquaculture production; encouraging investment in aquaculture development in areas of unproductive agricultural land; contributing to improving income for rural laborers and building new rural areas.
Furthermore, the locality focuses on developing potential aquatic species; organizing training courses for people on techniques and disease prevention and treatment measures for aquaculture species in saltwater, brackish, and freshwater areas such as whiteleg shrimp, tiger shrimp, abalone, kingfish, catfish, and crucian carp to reduce losses; and monitoring the environment in aquaculture areas. The commune strengthens its monitoring of the results of specialized agencies to track the progress of saltwater intrusion on rivers; and focuses on inspecting and guiding food safety conditions in aquaculture within the commune.
With synchronized solutions and active support from the government, the sandy areas of Nam Cua Viet commune are being "awakened" with aquaculture models focusing on organic farming, ecological farming, and the application of good aquaculture practice certification standards to enhance value and ensure sustainable development.
