Awakening the Cao Quang hills

QTO - Unlocking the economic potential of hilly areas has never been an easy task. But in the Cao Quang hilly area of Tuyen Hoa commune, with his keen business sense and a desire to get rich, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang has transformed this challenging land into a prosperous integrated farm, opening up a promising new direction.

From pondering and searching for a new direction...

Born and raised in Quang Son commune (formerly Ba Don town), in 2011, Mr. Quang moved to Cao Quang to start a new life. Responding to the then-booming economic reforestation movement, he boldly borrowed capital and poured all his efforts into reforesting barren hills with acacia trees. However, due to a lack of understanding of the soil and weather, coupled with fluctuating market prices, the economic benefits from the acacia forest did not meet expectations.

Refusing to accept defeat, Mr. Quang traveled far and wide to visit successful economic models both within and outside the province, from Nghe An and Ha Tinh to southern provinces. He researched through books, newspapers, and television, hoping to find a crop truly suitable for the Cao Quang region. After much deliberation, he realized that this hilly area had a moderate slope and a suitable soil layer for cultivation, especially citrus fruits, particularly the famous Xa Doai oranges from Nghe An.

In 2016, after acquiring sufficient knowledge and determination, Mr. Quang decided to carry out a "revolution" on his family's hilly land. He personally went to the Agricultural Science Institute to select and purchase the most disease-free and high-quality seedlings; he began to replan the orchards, improve the soil, and plant hundreds of Xa Doai oranges and green-skinned pomelos.

In the early days, difficulties piled up, but Mr. Quang did not lose heart. He diligently researched water-saving irrigation methods, learned how to compost organic fertilizer to improve the soil, and applied integrated pest and disease control measures. His hard work paid off; thanks to his diligence and the correct application of scientific and technological advancements, his orchard began to take root, flourish, and bear fruit.

Mr. Quang said: “Through practical cultivation, I have found that Xa Doai oranges are very suitable for the climate of Cao Quang. This is a famous 'royal tribute' orange variety, with thin skin, a golden yellow color when ripe, deep yellow flesh, a sweet and refreshing taste, and a very distinctive aroma that is unmistakable. Especially, this orange variety is usually harvested right around the Lunar New Year, so it has high economic value and a stable market.”

To date, after many years of cultivation, his orchard, spanning over 1 hectare of Xa Doai oranges and 1 hectare of green pomelos, has entered a stable business phase. Each harvest season, traders come directly to the orchard to purchase the produce. With stable selling prices, his family earns nearly 300 million VND annually from Xa Doai oranges alone.

...towards a diversified commodity production mindset.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang understood that for sustainable agricultural development, monoculture farming of a single crop was impossible. He began to think about a closed-loop, integrated farm model with multiple crops and livestock to "use short-term gains to support long-term growth" and minimize market risks.

Besides oranges and pomelos, which are his main crops, he expanded his experimental cultivation to include other high-value crops such as jackfruit and guava. He utilized the water surface area to dig ponds for fish farming and took advantage of the flowers from his fruit orchards to raise more than 20 bee colonies for honey.

Noticing the undeveloped land under the trees and on the hillsides, he boldly invested in planting lemongrass. With a selling price ranging from 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND per liter, the income from lemongrass essential oil brings his family hundreds of millions of VND each year.

Not content with just expanding the scale of his operation, Mr. Quang is also a pioneer in changing production mindsets. In 2024, with the support of the Agricultural and Fisheries Extension Center of Quang Binh province (formerly), his family implemented an intensive organic farming model for Xa Doai oranges.

He strictly adheres to the "three no's" process: no chemical pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, and no growth stimulants; at the same time, he focuses on building labels and traceability stamps to link product consumption.

“Organic farming is much harder. Although Xa Doai oranges grown using this method don't have the same glossy, eye-catching appearance as those grown conventionally, they are of much higher quality, have a richer flavor, and most importantly, are absolutely safe for consumers. Thanks to this, my products are increasingly trusted by the market, and discerning customers always place orders well in advance,” Mr. Quang shared.

With foresight, his family is currently investing in planting 3 hectares of ginger. It is expected that after about 10 months of cultivation, by March 2026, through partnerships with companies, the ginger grown in Cao Quang will be harvested, processed, and exported to the European market. If successful, this will be a breakthrough, opening the door for Tuyen Hoa's agricultural products to reach the global market.

“Mr. Nguyen Van Quang's integrated farm economic model not only develops his family's economy but also creates a strong ripple effect in the locality through the sharing of experience and techniques. With his tireless efforts and practical contributions, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang was selected as an “Excellent Farmer in Production and Business,” and was honored with a Certificate of Commendation from the former Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee and was a typical delegate attending the Provincial Emulation Congress,” added Phan Huy Hoang, Head of the Economic Department of Tuyen Hoa Commune.
