VHO - On the morning of December 26th, the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports held a conference to summarize its work in 2025 and outline directions and tasks for 2026. Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong attended and delivered a keynote address at the conference.

Beginning with the ASEAN Cup championship and ending with the SEA Games 33 championship, along with outstanding success in Olympic sports, Vietnamese sports experienced an impressive year in 2025, marking significant progress in many areas.

This concluding conference is an opportunity for the entire sector to look back on the journey so far, assess outstanding achievements, identify shortcomings and limitations, and draw lessons learned to confidently enter 2026 with many challenging but also hopeful tasks.

Achieved many remarkable results.

It can be affirmed that 2025 will be a year of many difficulties and challenges for the sports sector in general and the Vietnam Sports Department in particular.

Despite the large workload, increasingly demanding requirements, and numerous urgent and complex tasks, the field of physical education and sports has still achieved positive results, leaving many noteworthy marks.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong commended the achievements of the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports in 2025, emphasizing the positive results in building and perfecting institutions and policies. Notably, this included advising on and submitting to the Government a Decree replacing Decree No. 152/2018/ND-CP dated November 7, 2018, which stipulates certain regulations for coaches and athletes during training camps and competitions.

This decree, once issued, is expected to remove bottlenecks and create favorable conditions for coaches and athletes to train, compete, and contribute with peace of mind.

With the SEA Games 33 as its main focus, the Deputy Minister assessed that the Vietnamese sports delegation had basically fulfilled its targets at the Games, commending the achievements of the national teams, including the U22 national team, whose victory created a positive effect and delighted fans.

The Deputy Minister also stated that in 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will continue to focus on investing in facilities and equipment for training and competition, creating conditions for national teams to train in an increasingly better environment.

Regarding the tasks for 2026, the Deputy Minister instructed the Vietnam Sports Department to focus on effectively implementing the Decree replacing Decree 152 after it is issued by the Government. At the same time, with the task of preparing for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the sector needs to prepare athletes now, focusing on youth development and ensuring continuity between the preparations for the 2026 Asian Games and the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia.

The Deputy Minister expressed his hope that the spirit and winning momentum of the U22 team at the 33rd SEA Games would continue to spread strongly, becoming a driving force for Vietnamese sports to continue conquering new heights, bringing more victories and pride to fans and the people of the whole country.

A highlight of 2025 is the breakthrough in the sports sector in institutional development, perfecting the legal framework and policies for the field of sports. The Vietnam Sports Department has proactively and decisively directed the review, amendment, and promulgation of a system of legal documents in a way that is synchronized, modern, effective, and consistent with practical requirements.

In particular, mechanisms and policies for coaches, athletes, and sports medical staff continue to be studied and adjusted in a way that is increasingly comprehensive and progressive, meeting the requirements of developing high-performance sports in the new phase.

On the international stage, Vietnamese sports have successfully prepared for and participated in many major sporting events, most notably the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand and the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain. Through these events, the position and prestige of Vietnamese sports have been further affirmed, leaving a positive image in the eyes of regional and international friends.

The year 2025 also marked many outstanding achievements for Vietnamese football. The men's national team won the Southeast Asian Championship; the U23 men's team won the U23 Southeast Asian Championship for the third consecutive time; the U22 men's national football team and the women's national futsal team won gold medals; and the women's national football team won a silver medal at the 33rd SEA Games. These achievements not only brought joy and pride to fans but also contributed to affirming the position of Vietnamese football in the region.

Besides football, many other sports such as shooting, athletics, swimming, rowing, karate, wrestling, sepak takraw, volleyball, etc., have also achieved impressive results at international tournaments. In particular, Vietnam successfully hosted the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sport and related conferences in Hanoi , leaving a positive impression on international delegates and contributing to enhancing Vietnam's prestige and position in regional and international sports.

Implement 6 solutions in 2026 to achieve a breakthrough.

Regarding the direction and tasks for 2026, the Director of the Vietnam Sports Department, Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet, outlined six key solutions aimed at creating a breakthrough for the entire sector.

First and foremost, we must continue to thoroughly understand the Party and State's guidelines, policies, and strategies on the development of sports and physical education; closely follow the work programs and plans of the Ministry and our units to effectively implement assigned tasks, ensuring quality and progress.

Secondly, we need to create breakthroughs in institutions and policies, focusing on resolving and removing bottlenecks. Identifying 2026 as a pivotal year in the implementation of the country's medium-term and long-term socio-economic development strategies and plans, the sports sector will focus on reviewing, evaluating, and proposing amendments to the Law on Physical Education and Sports to ensure its suitability to current realities and meet the requirements of developing the sports sector in the new phase.

Thirdly, innovate and improve the quality of the "National Movement for Physical Training Following the Example of the Great President Ho Chi Minh"; strengthen efforts to encourage and attract a large number of people to participate in physical training and sports; create favorable conditions for the development of diverse types of training at the grassroots level...

Statements made at the Conference

Fourth, focus investment on sports where Vietnam has strengths; prioritize resources for Olympic and ASIAD sports with medal potential. Specifically, implement the Program for the Development of Key Sports for Olympic and ASIAD participation from 2026 to 2045 after approval by the Prime Minister; strengthen the application of science and technology, and sports biomedicine; and promote international cooperation in training, coaching, and competition to improve the skill level of athletes.

Fifth, build a synchronized and interconnected domestic competition system; continue to innovate the national competition system, perfect the competition system from the grassroots to the national level, and create a regular and stable competition environment for athletes.

Simultaneously, the focus is on improving the quality of tournament organization; strengthening linkages between localities; and integrating competitions with cultural and artistic events to attract the public and enhance the image of sports events. The sector is also promoting various forms of interaction with the audience through sideline activities, digital platforms, and online media to increase reach and community participation.

Sixth, continue to streamline the organizational structure and personnel of the Vietnam Sports Department and its affiliated units in the direction of "Sleek - Compact - Strong - Efficient - Effective - Effective," meeting the requirements of the tasks in the new situation.

Concluding a successful year, Vietnamese sports are preparing to confidently move into 2026 with much determination and high expectations.
